A dedicated circuit is a cable run from its own breaker in the panel to a single appliance or outlet, with nothing else on it. Several household appliances are required to have one under current code in most jurisdictions — a range, an electric dryer, a dishwasher, a built-in microwave, a garbage disposal, a window air conditioner — because they draw heavily or continuously enough that sharing is unsafe. Extending a nearby outlet is not a cheaper version of this. It is a different, non-compliant job. Dedicated circuits prevent shared overloads on kitchen and shop loads when multiple high-draw appliances would otherwise fight one undersized branch.

How circuit installation actually works

  1. Confirming a dedicated circuit is required

    The appliance manufacturer states the supply it needs, and code sets requirements for particular appliances and locations. Between those two, whether you need a dedicated circuit is usually a matter of fact rather than opinion. Kitchens and laundry areas have their own requirements that go beyond the individual appliance.

    Watch for: A quote to extend from a nearby receptacle for an appliance whose instructions call for a dedicated supply. It will work until it does not, and it will be flagged at sale or inspection.

  2. Checking the panel for a breaker space

    A new circuit needs somewhere to land. Where the panel is full, the options are a tandem breaker if the panel is listed for one, a subpanel, or a panel upgrade — and which of those applies depends on whether the service has capacity, not just whether the box has room.

    Watch for: A breaker fitted because it physically snaps into the panel. Panels are listed for specific breakers, and a breaker that is not listed for yours is a real and inexpensive-looking mistake.

  3. Sizing the conductor, the breaker and the receptacle

    Conductor size, breaker rating and receptacle configuration all follow from the appliance load and the length of the run. On 240 volt circuits each rating has its own receptacle configuration, so an appliance physically cannot be plugged into the wrong supply.

    Watch for: A larger breaker fitted to stop nuisance tripping. The breaker protects the cable, not the appliance — oversizing it removes the protection instead of fixing the problem.

  4. The run, the permit and the inspection

    Getting cable from the panel to the appliance is the labour, and the price is set by access rather than by distance. New circuits are permitted work in most jurisdictions, and the finished circuit should appear on the panel directory.

    Watch for: A new circuit that never makes it onto the panel directory, which is the label somebody will need in a hurry one day.

  5. Label the panel, test under load and leave a breaker map

    The new circuit is identified at the panel, loads are exercised (not just checked with a meter on an empty outlet), and the homeowner gets a clear record of which breaker feeds what.

    Watch for: An unlabeled spare that becomes a mystery breaker. Future work and emergencies both depend on panel schedules that match reality.

Can I do this myself?

Adding a circuit means working inside the panel, where the main lugs stay energised even with the main breaker switched off. This is the part of home electrical work with the least margin for error and the least forgiving consequences, and it is why panel work is licensed in most jurisdictions.

  • Identifying where the appliance will sit and what route cable could take, before anyone quotes
  • Clearing access to the panel, the attic or the basement so the run is quicker and cheaper
