  1. Read the opener’s safety symptoms and LED status

    Flash codes and sensor LED behaviour narrow the fault to alignment, power, wiring or a failed eye before parts are ordered. Document any prior bypass found so the household understands how dangerous the old “fix” was.

    Watch for: A technician who never looks at the sensor LEDs. They are free diagnostics.

  2. Rule out door balance and obstruction first

    A heavy door or a physical block can mimic sensor complaints. Hand-lift checks and a clear path prevent misdiagnosis. If the logic board is the failure, say so — do not sell endless eye pairs into a dead circuit.

    Watch for: Sensor replacement on a door that fails the balance test. Springs first.

  3. Clean lenses, square brackets and align the beam

    Lenses are cleaned; brackets are tightened so vibration does not walk them off aim; eyes face each other within the manufacturer’s alignment tolerance. After repair, both beam and contact reverse tests are mandatory close-out, not optional demos.

    Watch for: Bent brackets left crooked with "it sometimes works." Intermittent alignment fails when it matters.

  4. Trace low-voltage wiring and connections

    Staple damage, pinched wires at track movement and loose terminals at the power head are common. Repairs restore the circuit without jumpers that defeat safety. Damaged jackets and staples through low-voltage pairs create intermittent failures that look like ghosts.

    Watch for: Anyone proposing to bypass or jumper the sensors so the door closes. That is a hard refusal item.

  5. Address sun interference and environmental false trips

    Direct sun into a receiver can fool the circuit. Shields, slight repositioning or sun-resistant eyes may be used without disabling safety. Height and aim matter; eyes that see the floor or the sun will lie about a clear path.

    Watch for: Turning force settings up to push through a safety fault. That is the opposite of a repair.

  6. Replace eyes if failed, then verify both safety systems

    A dead eye pair is replaced with a compatible set, wired correctly, then tested by beam break and by contact reverse with a floor obstruction. Sun, dirt, vibration and prior DIY wiring are more common than “bad opener” as first causes.

    Watch for: Only testing the beam. Contact reverse is a separate system and still must work.

Never bypass, jumper or tape over photo eyes to make a door close. You are disabling the system that protects children and pets. Also do not climb the opener rail or work on live mains wiring to "fix sensors" — the eyes are low voltage, but the opener head is not.
