Backup generator services

A standby generator install is really three trades stapled together. An electrician wires the automatic transfer switch and the feed to your panel. A licensed gas fitter or plumber runs the natural gas or propane line. Someone pours or sets a pad. Building departments typically want both an electrical permit and a plumbing/gas permit, and they inspect and pressure-test the gas piping before it's signed off.

The single most important part is the automatic transfer switch. It isolates your house from the utility grid before the generator energizes anything. Without it, power from your generator can flow back out onto the utility lines — that's called backfeeding, and it can electrocute the lineworker trying to restore your power. This is not a job to save money on, and it is not a homeowner project.

Whole-home coverage is the expensive version. Many homes are better served by an "essentials" install that backs up the furnace, well pump, fridge, sump pump and a few circuits. Ask any salesperson to quote both, in writing, with the covered circuits listed. If they will only quote whole-home, that tells you what they're optimizing for.

How to choose

Get the covered-circuit list in writing

"Whole home" and "managed whole home" and "essential circuits" are three different products at three different prices. The quote should name the circuits.

Confirm who pulls which permit

Standby installs usually need an electrical permit and a gas permit. The contractor should pull both in their name and schedule the inspections.

Ask what the gas meter can actually supply

A large generator can outrun your existing gas meter. Utilities often have to upsize it. Find out before signing, not after the pad is poured.

Never accept an install without a transfer switch

Any arrangement that involves plugging a generator into a wall outlet or a dryer socket to power the house is a backfeeding hazard. Walk away from anyone who suggests it.

Separate the sale from the service plan

Maintenance contracts are often bundled into the pitch. Price the install on its own so you can compare bids that don't include a plan.
