It is the device that makes it physically impossible for your generator and the utility to be connected at the same time. Everything else about it - automatic or manual, whole-house or essential circuits, with or without load management - is a comfort decision. This part is not.

A transfer switch sits between the utility supply and your home's wiring and guarantees that only one source can ever feed the house. Establish what the generator can actually carry
The switch is specified around the machine, not the other way round. That means listing what you want running simultaneously, and then checking the starting surge of every motor load in it - well pumps, refrigeration compressors and air conditioning all draw several times their running current for a moment at start-up, and a generator that copes on the running numbers stalls on the surge.

Choose the coverage: essential circuits or the whole service

Service-rated is more expensive and needs a machine big enough to be worth it.

This is the piece most people have never heard of and it often reshapes the budget. When generator transfer switch installation is the wrong call

- A battery system is what you actually want. If the outages are short, the noise matters, or you already have solar, home battery storage covers the same critical loads with no fuel, no exhaust and no exercise cycle. It is a different product with a different transfer arrangement, and it deserves to be compared honestly before you commit.
