How generator transfer switch installation actually works

  1. Establish what the generator can actually carry

    The switch is specified around the machine, not the other way round. That means listing what you want running simultaneously, and then checking the starting surge of every motor load in it — well pumps, refrigeration compressors and air conditioning all draw several times their running current for a moment at start-up, and a generator that copes on the running numbers stalls on the surge.

    Watch for: A load list built from appliance nameplate running watts only. The surge is what trips a generator, and it is the number most often left out of the arithmetic.

  2. Choose the coverage: essential circuits or the whole service

    An essential-circuit switch is a small panel with a fixed set of circuits moved into it — heating controls, refrigeration, well pump, some lighting and receptacles. A service-rated switch sits ahead of the main panel and can transfer the entire service, so nothing has to be chosen in advance. Service-rated is more expensive and needs a machine big enough to be worth it.

    Watch for: A fixed-circuit switch sized so tightly that adding one circuit later means replacing the whole switch. Ask what spare capacity you are getting.

  3. Decide whether load management changes the answer

    This is the piece most people have never heard of and it often reshapes the budget. A load management module sheds or staggers the biggest loads — typically air conditioning, an electric water heater, a range, a dryer — so they never start at the same moment. With one, a smaller generator can serve a whole-service switch and still keep the house comfortable, because it is managing the peak rather than being sized for it.

    Watch for: A quote that solves the peak by selling a larger generator when a load management module would have done it. Ask explicitly whether load management was considered, and what each option costs.

  4. Automatic or manual

    An automatic switch senses the outage, signals the generator to start, waits for it to stabilise, transfers the load, and reverses all of that when utility power returns and holds steady. A manual switch means someone is home, goes outside, starts the machine and throws a handle. Automatic is standard with a permanently installed standby unit; manual is normal with a portable.

    Watch for: An automatic switch specified for a portable generator that has no remote-start capability. The switch can transfer, but somebody still has to pull a cord — which defeats the reason you paid for automatic.

  5. Mounting, the inlet, and the physical install

    The switch is mounted next to the panel or at the meter depending on type, and conductors are run between the panel, the switch and the generator. With a portable setup, an exterior power inlet box is fitted and a correctly rated cord connects the machine to it. With a standby unit, the run goes to the machine on its pad.

    Watch for: A generator position chosen for the shortest cable run rather than for exhaust. Carbon monoxide, not electricity, is what kills people with generators — the machine goes well away from doors, windows, vents and any partly enclosed space, and the cable length follows that decision.

  6. Grounding, bonding and the utility notification

    Whether the generator's neutral is bonded at the machine or at the service depends on the switch type — a switch that transfers the neutral is treated differently from one that does not. Getting it wrong produces either objectionable current on the ground path or a ground fault system that does not work. Some utilities also want notification that a generator is connected.

    Watch for: Anyone treating grounding and bonding as boilerplate. It is a genuine judgement based on the specific switch and machine, and it is one of the things an inspector will look at hardest.

  7. Permit, inspection and a live changeover test

    This is permitted work in most jurisdictions, and the inspection covers the switching arrangement, the inlet or generator connection, and the grounding. The install ends with a real changeover — utility killed at the main, the transfer observed, the load carried, and the return to utility observed.

    Watch for: A handover with no live test. The first time your switch transfers should not be during a storm at two in the morning with nobody who knows the system in the house.
