Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523A gutter is an emergency when water is entering the house, when a section has detached and is hanging over a walkway, or when overflow is running directly against the foundation during an ongoing storm. Everything else can wait for a scheduled visit at normal rates.
In the moment, the goal is to move water away from the house and keep people away from anything hanging. Redirect the discharge on the ground with a temporary extension or a length of downspout laid on the grade. Do not go up a ladder in a storm or high wind.
If a section has torn loose, cordon the area below it. Detached gutter sections are heavy, have sharp edges, and can come down without warning. This is one of the few times a same-day call is justified.
Before anything is repaired, photograph everything from the ground: the detached section, the water path, any interior staining, and the surrounding fascia. If a storm caused it, that documentation is what an insurance claim will turn on. Coverage varies by policy and by cause, so call your own insurer and ask what your policy covers rather than relying on a contractor's characterization.
Be alert to storm-chasing crews. After severe weather, out-of-area companies canvass damaged neighborhoods. Verify licensing with your state or local authority, confirm insurance with the carrier, and do not sign anything that assigns your insurance claim to a contractor without understanding what that means.
