The single most important thing to know is that these services are not interchangeable, and the company at your door usually sells only one of them. A gutter guard company will not tell you your gutters are pitched wrong. A cleaning company will not tell you the fascia behind the gutter is rotting. Get the diagnosis before you get the quote.

Be suspicious of any contractor who quotes a whole-house replacement without walking the roofline with you and showing you the specific failures.

How to choose

Diagnose before you buy: Ask the contractor to show you the actual problem — the overflow point, the rusted seam, the sag. If they cannot point at it, you do not need the work yet.
Cleaning first, always: A gutter that overflows may just be full. Clean it and watch it in the next real rain before authorizing anything bigger.
Replacement is a roofline job, not a gutter job: If fascia or soffit is soft, that gets fixed first. Hanging new gutters on rotten wood wastes the money.
Guards are a separate decision: Do not let a guard sale get bundled into a repair visit. Price it on its own and compare it against your actual cleaning bill.

How often should gutters be cleaned?

Is repair or replacement better?

Repair if the failures are localized and the gutters are otherwise sound and correctly pitched. Replace when seams are leaking in multiple places, the metal is corroded through, or the system was undersized to begin with.

Do gutter companies fix fascia rot?

Some do, many do not. Ask before booking. If they do not, you need a carpenter on site before the new gutter goes up.

Can I just clean gutters myself?

On a single-story house with a stable ladder and a spotter, often yes. On two or three stories the fall risk is real and the professional price is not high relative to the risk.
