A downspout is the vertical pipe that takes water from the gutter to the ground, and it is the part of the system that most often limits performance. Adding one to a long run, or upsizing from a 2×3 to a 3×4, frequently cures an overflow that looked like a gutter capacity problem. The decision that matters more than either is the discharge: a downspout emptying at the base of a wall delivers a large volume of water straight to the foundation, in one place, every time it rains.

Work out how many outlets the roof needs
Outlet count follows from the roof area draining to each run and the local rainfall intensity, and it is the number that most quotes skip. As a working principle, long runs want an outlet at each end rather than one at the far end, and any point where a valley concentrates flow deserves its own.
Watch for: Outlet count copied from the existing arrangement. If the current system overflows, replicating its outlet positions reproduces the fault in a new colour.
Size the pipe to the flow, not to the fashion
The usual residential choice is a 2×3 or a 3×4 rectangular downspout, or a round pipe on half-round systems. A 3×4 carries substantially more water for a modest increase in material cost, and it also blocks far less readily because the elbow throat is wider.
Watch for: A large gutter feeding small downspouts. This is a real and common mismatch: the trough was upsized, the outlets were not, and the bottleneck simply moved down a level.
Place the drops where they can go somewhere
A downspout has to land where the water can be taken away — not over a patio, not against a step, not into a bed against the wall. Placement is a compromise between drainage logic, elevation appearance and what happens at ground level.
Watch for: A drop positioned purely for looks, discharging onto a paved surface that slopes back toward the house. It is tidy on the elevation and it feeds water under the slab.
Fit the outlet, the elbows and the straps properly
The outlet is cut into the gutter floor and sealed. Elbows carry the pipe back to the wall and then down, and the run is strapped to the wall at intervals so it cannot work loose or drum in wind. Joints face downstream so water cannot escape at every lap.
Watch for: Elbows lapped the wrong way round, so each joint leaks down the wall face. It is easy to spot from the ground once you know: look for staining below every joint.
Decide and build the discharge
This is the design decision, and there are three realistic answers: a splash block onto ground that slopes away, a buried solid pipe running to daylight at a lower point, or a connection into an existing drainage system where one legitimately exists. Each has conditions attached.
Watch for: Downspouts tied into a foundation drain or a perforated pipe. Feeding roof water into a system designed to relieve groundwater is a known way to overwhelm it — and connecting to a sanitary sewer is prohibited in most jurisdictions. Ask exactly what the pipe connects to.
Prove it at full flow and check the ground afterwards
A hose at the gutter shows the outlet drains and the joints hold. The more useful test is looking at where the water lands after a real storm — that is when a splash block that has settled, or an extension that is too short, becomes obvious.
Watch for: A buried extension that has never been proven to discharge. Buried pipe silts up and collapses, and a blocked underground extension backfills water directly against the foundation with no visible sign at all.
Downspouts are usually priced per drop, covering the outlet, elbows, pipe and straps, with two-storey runs costing more than single-storey. How many downspouts are you fitting, and what did you base that on?
The answer reveals whether the roof was calculated or the existing layout was copied. Copying an arrangement that overflows guarantees it will overflow again.
Are you quoting 2×3 or 3×4, and why?
The bigger section carries much more and blocks much less for a small cost difference. If 2×3 is proposed, there should be a reason beyond habit.
Exactly where does each downspout discharge, and how far from the wall?
The single most consequential detail in the whole gutter system, and the one most often left off a quote entirely.
If you are connecting to an existing buried pipe, have you proven that line flows?
Silted or collapsed underground extensions are common and invisible. Connecting into one moves water against the foundation with no symptom above ground.
Are you tying into anything that also serves foundation drainage?
You want a clear no. Roof volume into a groundwater-relief system is a recognised way to overwhelm it.
How are the elbows lapped and how often is the pipe strapped?
Reversed laps leak at every joint and under-strapped pipe works loose in wind. Both are cheap to get right and irritating to fix later.
