What is gutter cleaning?
Gutter cleaning is the removal of leaf litter, roof grit and nesting material from the gutter trough and, critically, from the outlets and downspouts. A visit on an average house takes an hour or two. How often you need it is set by what is growing above the roof, not by a calendar: a house under pines with needles dropping year-round can need four visits where a house with no overhanging trees may need one.
Signs you need gutter cleaning
- Water spilling over the front edge of the gutter during ordinary rain rather than only in downpours
- Plants - genuinely growing seedlings, moss or grass - visible in the trough
- Sag appearing in a run that was straight last year, because wet debris is heavy
- A downspout that stays dry while the gutter above it is full
- Granules, twigs and leaf mulch on the ground at the base of downspouts after rain
- Birds, wasps or squirrels working at the roofline in spring
- Staining or streaking on the siding directly beneath a specific length of gutter

How gutter cleaning actually works
Clear the trough by hand, not by hose first
Wet debris is scooped out and bagged before any water is introduced. Flushing a loaded gutter simply washes the debris into the outlet and creates a blockage further down the system where it is far harder to reach.

Clear and flush the outlets and downspouts
This is the part of the job that actually matters and the part most often skipped. Outlets and the first elbow are where blockages form, and a downspout is only proven clear when water discharges at the bottom at full flow.

Inspect what the debris was hiding
With the gutter empty the visit is also the best inspection you get all year: hanger condition, pitch, standing water in the trough, joint separation, and the state of the fascia behind. Any competent operator reports these.

Rinse and leave the site clean
A light flush of the trough to move fine sediment, then debris removed from the property and the ground beneath the work area cleared. Roof grit and leaf mulch left on beds or a patio is the usual complaint after a cheap visit.

Check discharge and grade at the ground
Water that leaves a clear downspout still fails if it dumps against the foundation. Confirm extensions, splash blocks or underground drains move water away, and note any soft soil or staining at the base of the wall for follow-up.

When gutter cleaning is the wrong call
When saying yes is the wrong move:
- You are cleaning three or more times a year because of overhanging trees. At that frequency you are paying for a recurring service to manage a problem that guards or tree work address at source. Do the arithmetic over five years before booking the next visit.
- The gutter is overflowing while visibly clean. That is a slope, capacity or downspout problem and no amount of clearing changes it. Booking repeat cleans against a sizing fault is the most common way homeowners spend money on the wrong service.
- The run is sagging or has pulled from the fascia. Get it re-hung first. Cleaning a run that is already dropping does not fix it, and the weight comes straight back next autumn.
- It is icy, or there is snow on the roof. Winter gutter work is a genuine fall hazard and frozen debris does not come out cleanly anyway. Ice in the gutter is also usually a symptom of attic heat loss rather than something cleaning solves.
- You want the outside of the gutter to look better. The black tiger-striping on the front face is oxidation and roof runoff residue. That is exterior cleaning work - gutter brightening - and it is a different service with different chemistry, not part of a clear-out.
- The only fault is one blocked downspout. If everything drains but one outlet, that is a single-point clearance, not a whole-house visit. Say so when you book so you are not quoted the full service.

What to check when hiring for gutter cleaning
- Are the downspouts flushed and proven, or only the troughs cleared? The single question that separates a real clean from a cosmetic one. Ask for confirmation that water was run to discharge.
- Is debris removed from the property, or bagged and left? Priced both ways and rarely stated. Roof grit tipped onto planting beds is the standard complaint after a bargain quote.
- Will I get a written note on hanger, pitch and fascia condition? The gutter is only empty and visible for one hour a year. A report at that moment is the cheapest early warning available.
- Are you working from ladders, from the roof, or from the ground? Ground-based vacuum and pole systems avoid roof traffic but handle wet, packed debris less well. Neither is wrong; you should know which you are buying.
- Do you carry liability insurance and workers' compensation? This is height work on your property. Ask for the certificate, not the assurance - it is the one trade where an uninsured injury lands squarely on the homeowner.
- Do you offer a scheduled interval, and can I set it after seeing what comes out? The right interval is decided by your specific trees. Committing to a plan before the first visit means guessing at your own frequency.
