Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523Most gutter faults are hangers, pitch, sealant or a blocked outlet — all fixable in an hour. We match you with vetted local pros and help you tell a genuine repair from a replacement sold as one.
Gutter repair covers the faults that do not require a new system: re-hanging a sagging run, resetting the pitch, replacing pulled hangers, resealing corners and joints, clearing a blocked outlet, and refastening or replacing a short damaged section. Most visits are an hour or two. The judgement that matters is where repair stops paying — and that is usually decided by the condition of the fascia behind the gutter, not by the gutter itself.

Find where the water is actually going
A hose in the gutter reproduces the fault on demand. That distinguishes an overflow from a leak, a blocked outlet from a low spot, and water going behind the gutter from water going over the front of it — four problems with four different fixes that all look identical from the ground.
Watch for: A quote written from a ground-level look and a photo. The commonest misdiagnosis is calling an overflow a leak, which leads to sealant applied to a gutter that was never leaking.
Check the fascia behind the gutter
The hanger is only as good as the wood it is screwed into. A probe along the fascia behind a sagging run shows whether the fastening failed or the substrate did — and that single check decides whether this is a repair or the start of a bigger job.
Watch for: New hangers driven into soft fascia a few inches from the old holes. It holds for a season. The correct fix is to replace the board, and being told that early is a good sign about the contractor.
Reset the hangers and the pitch
Sagging is usually fastener failure rather than gutter failure. Hidden hangers go back in at 18 to 24 inch spacing into sound wood, and the run is re-hung to fall toward the outlet. Legacy spike-and-ferrule hardware is normally replaced rather than re-driven.
Watch for: A run levelled by eye. Standing water is what rots a gutter from the inside and it is invisible until you look in from above, so the re-hang has to be checked with water, not sight.
Reseal joints, corners and end caps properly
A sealant repair that lasts requires the old sealant removed, the surface cleaned to bare metal and dried, and a gutter-specific sealant applied inside the joint. Done that way it is a durable fix; done as a bead smeared over the outside it is a few months.
Watch for: Silicone from a general-purpose tube. It does not bond well to the coating on aluminium gutter and it fails at the edges, which is why so many resealed corners drip again by the following spring.
Clear and prove the downspouts
Outlets and the first elbow are where blockages sit. A blocked downspout presents as a gutter that overflows constantly and a downspout that stays dry — and it is regularly mistaken for undersized gutter.
Watch for: A downspout declared clear because it "sounded fine". It should be run with a hose until water discharges at the bottom at full flow.
Gutter repair is usually a small-ticket job — a service call plus labour, with sealant, hangers, outlets and short replacement sections priced as parts. Fascia carpentry is the item that changes the number materially. The gutters cost guide has current ranges for repair against full replacement.

Everyone else ranking for this is paid when you say yes. Here's when you shouldn't.
The threshold is usually fascia condition and the share of run affected, not the age of the gutter.
Sag, overflow, leaking joints, wrong pitch and missing downspouts, each diagnosed separately.
Aluminium, steel, copper and vinyl age and fail in different ways, which changes what is repairable.
Will you water-test to confirm the fault before quoting the fix?
Overflow, leak, blockage and standing water look the same from the ground and need different repairs. A hose settles it in five minutes.
Have you checked the fascia behind the section that is sagging?
Decides whether this is a repair at all. A contractor who has not checked has not diagnosed the job.
What sealant are you using, and how are you preparing the surface?
A resealed joint that was not cleaned back to bare metal is a repair with a short expiry date. Gutter-specific sealant, applied inside the joint, is the durable version.
Are you re-using the existing hangers or fitting new ones?
Re-driving a spike into the same hole is not a repair. New hidden hangers into sound wood at correct spacing is.
What is your minimum call-out, and does it include the first hour of work?
Small gutter jobs are dominated by the call-out charge. Knowing whether labour is included changes whether it is worth bundling two small fixes into one visit.
At what point would you tell me to replace this run instead?
A contractor who can name their own threshold is diagnosing. One who repairs anything, or replaces everything, is not.
