Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523Heating and cooling equipment fails when it is asked to work hardest — the first hard freeze and the first serious heat wave. Those are also the weeks when every contractor in the network is booked, so a covered claim and a fast repair are not the same thing. Service equipment before its season, not during it.
Pre-season maintenance is the practical answer. Have heating serviced before winter and cooling before summer. It reduces failures, and — more importantly for a warranty holder — it generates the dated invoices that defeat an improper-maintenance denial. Some plans sell HVAC maintenance as an add-on at $10 to $15 a month; whether that beats booking a local tune-up yourself is worth checking.
Plan for the wait. Because you cannot choose your own contractor under most of these contracts, a peak-season claim goes into the same queue as everyone else's. Have a plan for a few days without heat or cooling: space heaters, a place to stay, or a backup contractor you'd pay out of pocket for.
Don't buy coverage in the emergency. Waiting periods and pre-existing condition clauses exist precisely to stop this. Buying a contract while a system is already failing is the most reliable way to pay a premium and receive nothing.
Use shoulder seasons for the paperwork. Spring and fall are the right time to re-read your contract, check your renewal price against the $300 to $1,000 range typical of these plans, and update your maintenance folder.
