Irrigation valve repair restores a zone valve that will not open, will not close, or weeps after the controller moves on. Most faults live in the solenoid, the diaphragm, debris on the seat, or corroded low-voltage splices in a flooded valve box. If only one zone misbehaves while others are fine, start at that valve — not at a new controller. When one zone will not start, will not stop, or weeps at the valve box, think diaphragm, solenoid, debris and wiring before replacing the controller. One zone’s behaviour is a valve story until proven otherwise.

Prove the fault is valve-side, not controller-side
Manual operation at the valve, then activation with a known-good output or jumper logic, separates a dead station board from a field problem. This step prevents unnecessary controller replacement. Verify the zone starts and stops cleanly through a full controller cycle after reassembly.
Watch for: Swapping the controller first because it is indoors and comfortable. Comfort is not diagnosis.
Test the solenoid and field wiring
Solenoid resistance and voltage at the valve under command show whether the coil is open, shorted or simply not receiving signal. Splices are opened and remade with waterproof connectors when green corrosion appears. Replace seals and diaphragms as matched kits rather than reusing swollen parts.
Watch for: Electrical tape “repairs” reburied in mud. They fail again after the next irrigation season.
Open the valve and service the diaphragm path
Debris on the diaphragm or seat is the classic won’t-close cause. Diaphragms crack with age; ports clog. Cleaning and a diaphragm kit fix many valves without a full body swap. Inspect diaphragm and ports for grit, root hairs and mineral scale that recreate the same failure.
Watch for: Replacing the entire valve when a kit and clean-out would restore it — unless the body is cracked or threads are destroyed.
Address box conditions that caused the failure
A valve repaired and left in a sump of silt will return as a callback. Gravel bases, proper box height, lid integrity and drain paths matter as much as the rebuild. Test solenoid ohms and controller output before condemning either side blindly.
Watch for: Closing a mud coffin on a clean rebuild. You paid for a temporary improvement.
Commission the zone under automatic control
The zone is run from the controller through a full open/close cycle, checked for weeping, and timed against heads to ensure pressure returned to normal. Isolate and depressurise correctly so opening the valve does not become a trench fountain.
Watch for: A manual-only success with no automatic test. The electrical path is half the valve system.
Solenoid or diaphragm kit repairs are usually modest parts cost plus a service call; full valve replacement costs more, especially if manifold geometry is awkward or the box must be rebuilt. Multiple valves in one flooded box often share labour efficiently on a single visit.

Shut water off and relieve pressure before opening a valve under load. Spring-loaded parts and residual pressure can spray debris. If you cannot isolate the system, do not dismantle the valve body. Valve boxes can hide wasps, standing water and low-voltage faults — and the mainline side remains pressurised until isolated correctly.
