Protect lead time: order before you tear out if the kitchen must stay usable

Manufacturing lead for stock, semi-custom and custom boxes is measured in weeks. Demolition that starts before cabinets are confirmed in production converts a planned wait into living without a kitchen.

Watch for: A schedule that shows demo week one and "cabinets TBD". That is the commonest sequencing failure on kitchen jobs.
Rough-in complete, walls serviceable, floors known

Waste, supply, gas and circuit positions must match the cabinet plan before boxes land. Floor height at the run matters for scribing and for appliances that sit under a counter.

Watch for: Hanging wall cabinets before the final floor height is known when the floor is being replaced. Toe-kick and appliance clearances shift.
Set and level base runs, then wall units, then template countertops

Bases establish the working height and the plane the stone follows. Wall units follow. Countertop template happens from installed boxes, never from drawings alone.

Watch for: A fabricator offering to template from plans "to save a week". Every out-of-square wall ends up in that gap, and stone does not stretch.

In a remodel budget, cabinets are usually the largest single line after structure. Drivers are box grade, finish, hardware and whether layout changes force custom sizes. Everyone else ranking for this is paid when you say yes. Here's when you shouldn't.

The cabinet boxes are sound and only the doors look dated. Refacing or door replacement keeps the carcasses and avoids a full hang. Assess the boxes before you buy a strip-out — see cabinet refacing.
Rough-in and inspections are not finished. Hanging cabinets over unfinished plumbing or open electrical work means boxes come off again, or services get buried in the wrong place.
Appliance models are not final. Openings, ventilation and panel-ready clearances are product-specific. Ordering cabinets first locks you into openings you may not want.
You only need a few units replaced. Matching one run into an old kitchen is a different job from a full install. A full-room cabinet package is the wrong purchase for a single failed sink base.

When do cabinets get installed in a kitchen remodel?

After demolition, rough-in and inspection, and after the walls and floor are ready to receive them. Before countertop templating, backsplash and final appliance connection. The countertop template cannot honestly happen until the boxes are set and level.

Should I order cabinets before demolition?

Usually yes if you need a continuous kitchen life. Lead time and measured survey come first; demo that waits for a confirmed production slot keeps the dead weeks short. Demo first only when the existing kitchen must come out for another reason and you have a temporary kitchen plan.

Who measures for cabinets — dealer or installer?

A final site measure by whoever is responsible for fit should happen after walls and floors are close to finished condition, even if a sales measure happened earlier. Out-of-square walls and floor slope show up then. If the person hanging the boxes never saw the room, expect scribes, fillers and arguments about whose error it was.

What if the cabinets arrive damaged?

Photograph packaging and parts before the truck leaves, refuse or note damaged cartons on the delivery ticket, and contact the supplier immediately. Installing a known-damaged box to "keep the schedule" often voids an easy replacement. Build a day or two of float into the remodel calendar for exactly this.

Can cabinets go in before the flooring?

It depends on the flooring system. Many kitchens set cabinets on the subfloor and run finished flooring to the toe-kick; others need the finished floor down first so appliance heights and dishwasher openings work. Decide with the flooring and cabinet trades together — changing midstream is how dishwashers end up too high or doors bind on new plank thickness.
