A kitchen electrical upgrade brings the room's circuits, outlets and capacity in line with how the kitchen will actually be used after a remodel — dedicated runs for major appliances, adequate small-appliance circuits, protection devices required locally, and outlet positions set against cabinets and worktops rather than old plaster lines. Build the load list from real appliance models
Nameplate ratings for range, ovens, microwave, dishwasher, disposal, fridge and any specialty units drive circuit counts. Wish-list categories are not enough. Include future-proofing only where you will actually buy the appliance — empty 50-amp runs "just in case" still consume panel space and budget.
Watch for: Electrical quotes written before appliance SKUs exist. You will pay for change orders when induction replaces gas late.
Separate kitchen work from whole-house capacity
If the panel or service entrance cannot accept the new circuits, the project expands to a service or panel upgrade. Establish that at survey, not at first fix. A kitchen package that fits the room but not the panel is not a kitchen-only problem anymore.
Watch for: A kitchen-only price that quietly assumes free breaker spaces you do not have.
Design outlet and switch layout on the kitchen elevations
Countertop outlet spacing, island receptacles, switch locations for lighting layers and disposal, and clearances from sinks as required locally. Positions are measured from finished cabinets and tops. Decide multi-gang switch locations so people can hit task light without crossing a wet floor in the dark.
Watch for: Outlets laid out on empty walls before cabinet depths are known. Half the devices end up inside uppers or behind a fridge.
First fix while walls and floors are open
Cables, boxes and any floor penetrations for islands go in before insulation and drywall. Inspection happens before close-up where required. Under-cabinet lighting feeds and hood circuits belong in this pass even if fittings arrive later.
Watch for: Forgetting island power and under-cabinet feeds until after plaster. Surface trunking is the expensive apology.
Protection, labelling and appliance circuits
GFCI/AFCI as required, correct breaker types for each load, and a panel schedule a future owner can read. Dedicated circuits for major appliances stay dedicated. Photograph the open walls before close-up so future service work is not guesswork.
Watch for: Sharing a "spare" circuit across dishwasher and disposal because the panel is tight. That is how nuisance trips return.
Second fix after cabinets and surfaces
Devices finish at final height, plates match splashback thickness, and appliances get their receptacles in the designed pockets. Confirm disposal switch and any appliance garage outlets still make sense with the final door swings.
Watch for: Cutting decorative backsplash as an electrical plan. The plan should have preceded the tile.
Commission under simultaneous kitchen load
Run multiple small-appliance outlets, lights and a major appliance together. The test that matters is breakfast rush, not a single lamp. Walk the panel labels with the homeowner so "kitchen left" means something on a Tuesday night.
Watch for: Sign-off with one circuit tested. Shared neutrals and mislabelled breakers hide until guests arrive.
