What is kitchen renovation?

A kitchen renovation renews the working parts of a kitchen whose layout still functions - cabinets or doors, worktops, appliances, lighting, flooring and the services that have aged out - without treating the room as a blank plan. The governing decision is whether the footprint and work zones are good enough to keep. If they are, renovation concentrates money on condition and performance. If they are not, you need a remodel that can move walls and services.

Signs you need kitchen renovation

• The room cooks and serves fine, but every surface shows its age and repairs no longer hold
• Appliances are failing in sequence and openings are still standard enough that like-for-like fits
• Circuits trip under normal kitchen use, or outlets and lighting feel sparse by modern standards

How kitchen renovation actually works

   Separate condition problems from layout problems

   Walk the room with two lists: what is worn or non-compliant, and what is geometrically wrong. Renovation only buys the first list. If the second list is long, stop and re-scope as a remodel.

   Watch forFlooring last with no plan for toe-kicks and appliance height. Renovation floors fail at the edges when cabinets were never meant to come out.

   Upgrade appliances into existing openings where possible

   Like-for-like widths keep cabinet work minimal. Confirm model dimensions, ventilation and electrical load before ordering - modern units often draw more than the circuit they replace.

   Watch forBuying a larger fridge or a different fuel type without checking the opening, the circuit and the gas run. That single decision reopens the remodel.

   Phase for habitability if the household cannot lose the room

   Renovation scopes often allow temporary cooking zones more easily than gut remodels. Phase wet work, then cabinets, then finishes so one sink and a fridge remain reachable as long as possible.

   Watch forStarting every trade at once because the quote looked faster. Speed without a temporary kitchen plan is how corners get cut on the hidden work.

7. 7

   Commission services and snag for daily use, not photos

   Test every circuit under simultaneous load, run water at every connection, check door and drawer alignment after the room has been lived in for a few days, and keep retention until those settle.

   Watch forFinal payment on the day of "reveal". Settlement and soft-close adjustment show up after real cooking.
