What is infinity pool construction?

Infinity pool construction - also called a vanishing edge or negative edge - makes one side of the pool appear to spill into the view by overflowing a level weir into a lower catch basin. That basin, the surge capacity for bathers and wind, and the plumbing that returns water to the main vessel are a second hydraulic system, not a tile choice. Almost all true vanishing edges are built in concrete (gunite or shotcrete) because the structure and weir tolerances demand it.

How infinity pool construction actually works

   Site and view confirmation before the edge is sold

   The vanishing side only earns its keep if the sightline from the house and deck actually clears the horizon. Slope, neighbouring roofs and tree growth matter. A beautiful edge facing a fence is an expensive mistake.

   Weir design and structural forming

   The overflow edge must be level within tight tolerance so the sheet of water is even. That means careful forming, steel and shotcrete or gunite work, then finish work that does not destroy the level. This is specialist concrete pool craft, not a bolt-on coping.

   Catch basin and surge capacity

   Water that goes over the weir has to go somewhere that can hold the surge when people get in, when wind piles water, and when the system is off. Undersized basins flood equipment pads or starve the main pool. This volume calculation is the heart of the design.

   Dual-level plumbing and equipment

   Pumps, filtration and often sanitation must manage water moving between main vessel and basin. Valving, auto-fill, overflow protection and sometimes separate filtration legs add cost and failure points. Noise and equipment placement need planning because the system may run differently than a standard pool.

   Finish, tile and the visible edge

   Waterline tile, weir cap material and the face of the vanishing wall are what people photograph. They also have to survive continuous sheet flow and sun. Material choice here is both aesthetic and maintenance.

   Commissioning the edge as its own system

   Start-up is not only chemistry. It is balancing flow over the weir, verifying surge behaviour, setting auto-fill, and proving the basin does not flood the pad on a simulated load. Handover should include how to winterise or idle the edge if your climate requires it.

   Watch forBeing taught only how to run the main pool while the edge “just works.” When it does not, you need the settings and the service path documented.

7. 7

   Ongoing service reality

   More water path means more places for scale, debris and mechanical wear. Basin cleaning access, leaf load on the weir and sensor or auto-fill reliability become part of ownership. Budget service from a company that has worked on vanishing edges, not only standard rectangles.

   Watch forThe cheapest maintenance contract in town with no experience on dual-level systems. Training on your pool should not be their first edge job.

What does infinity pool construction cost?
