Replacing it is the one pool upgrade with a genuine running-cost argument — and the one where that argument is most often oversold.
Replacing a pool pump means matching a new pump to what your pool and its plumbing actually need, fitting it to the existing pad, and connecting it electrically — including bonding. The decision that matters is not the brand. It is whether the pump is sized to the turnover your pool needs at a flow your pipes can carry, and whether a variable-speed unit's lower running cost genuinely pays back given your electricity rate and how many hours a year you actually run it. Both of those are arithmetic, and both are usually skipped.

Diagnose before you buy — is it the pump or the motor?
A failed motor, a worn shaft seal, a cracked pot lid or a blocked impeller are all repairs. A pump that has run for many seasons and has now failed a bearing is usually a replacement.
Watch for: A replacement quoted without the pump ever having been opened. Ask what specifically failed. Sometimes the honest answer is still "replace it", but you should hear the reasoning.
Size to the pool and to the pipework, not to the old label
The right pump moves the pool's volume through the filter at a flow the suction and return lines can carry comfortably. That calculation frequently lands lower than whatever is currently on the pad.
Watch for: Matching the horsepower of the old pump because it is what was there. A great many pools were built with pumps larger than they needed, and copying that forward simply buys the same waste again.
Decide single, dual or variable speed on your own numbers
Variable-speed pumps use dramatically less energy at low speed, which is where most of a pool's circulation can happen. The saving is real; its size depends on your electricity rate, your run hours and your climate.
Watch for: Payback claims based on national averages. Ask the installer to redo the arithmetic with your actual rate per kilowatt-hour and your actual season length. Also check whether efficiency rules in your state already make the choice for you.
Fit and re-plumb the connections
The new pump rarely lines up exactly with the old one. Suction and return connections are re-made, ideally with unions so the next replacement is a swap rather than a saw job.
Watch for: Reducers and tight elbows added to make a new pump fit an old footprint. Every restriction added at the pad costs the pump work and costs you power for the life of the unit.
Electrical connection and bonding
The pump is wired to a suitable circuit with appropriate protection, and its motor and the surrounding metal are connected to the pool's bonding grid. Variable-speed pumps may have different supply requirements from the pump they replace.
Watch for: A bonding lug left disconnected because the old pump's wire did not reach. This is not a cosmetic detail — it is the electrical safety system of a pool, and it needs a licensed electrician and, in most places, an inspection.
Prime, commission and set a schedule
The pump is primed, flow and filter pressure recorded, and the run schedule set — with a variable-speed pump this means choosing speeds and hours, which is where the saving actually comes from.
Watch for: A variable-speed pump left running at full speed all day because nobody programmed it. It is extremely common and it wastes the entire reason you bought the pump.

The electrical connection and the bonding of the pump and pad are not a homeowner job. Bonding is the system that keeps a pool from becoming electrically dangerous, it is inspected in most jurisdictions, and a pump swap is a very common point at which it quietly gets disconnected. What failed, exactly, and is it repairable?
The honest starting question. It costs nothing to ask and occasionally saves the whole job.
What size are you specifying and how did you arrive at it?
You want a turnover figure and a pipe-capacity figure, not a horsepower matched to the old sticker.
Can you show me the payback arithmetic using my electricity rate and my run hours?
The variable-speed case is usually good, but it should be demonstrated on your numbers rather than asserted from an average.
Is a licensed electrician doing the connection and confirming the bonding?
A pump swap is one of the most common points at which pool bonding is quietly lost. Get it explicitly confirmed.
Will you fit unions so the next replacement is not a cutting job?
Trivial to include now and it saves labour every time anything at the pad is serviced.
Will you program the speeds and hours and show me how to change them?
An unprogrammed variable-speed pump delivers none of what you paid for, and this handover is skipped constantly.
