Pool automation is a controller that operates the equipment pad — pump speeds, heater setpoint, valve actuators, lighting, salt cell output and any water features — on schedules and from a phone. Installing it means fitting the control panel, wiring the equipment to it, adding actuators to any valves that need to move, and commissioning the schedules. The technical constraint is compatibility: controllers talk properly to their own manufacturer's equipment and less well to everyone else's. The strategic constraint is that this is a piece of consumer electronics attached to a twenty-year pool.

Inventory the equipment and check what the controller can actually talk to
A controller can switch almost anything on and off through a relay. What it cannot necessarily do is vary a third-party pump's speed, read a heater's status, or manage another manufacturer's salt cell.
Watch for: A quote that promises full control over a mixed-brand pad without naming the integration for each item. The failure mode is a system that technically works and cannot do the two things you bought it for.
Decide what genuinely needs automating
Pump scheduling and heater control deliver most of the value. Valve actuators, feature control and lighting scenes are nice and add cost and complexity.
Watch for: Actuators specified on every valve. Each one is a motor outdoors with a limited life. Automate the valves you actually move; leave the rest as handles.
Mount the panel and run the wiring
The control panel needs a sheltered, accessible position, and low-voltage control wiring is run to each device along with any actuator cabling.
Watch for: A panel mounted in full sun on the hottest wall of the pad. Heat and UV are what kill this equipment, and siting is free at install time.
Electrical connection and bonding
Power and switching for the equipment goes through the controller, which is licensed electrical work, and the pad's bonding arrangements must be maintained.
Watch for: Anyone treating this as a low-voltage gadget install. It is switching the pool's equipment circuits, and it belongs to an electrician.
Network, app and account setup
Most systems want a network connection and a manufacturer account. Wi-Fi at an equipment pad is often marginal, and a wired or bridged connection is more reliable.
Watch for: Marginal Wi-Fi accepted at commissioning because it worked on the day. An intermittently connected controller is more annoying than no controller at all.
Commissioning — the schedules are the product
Pump speeds and run hours, heater windows, salt output and lighting scenes are set and then adjusted over a season. This is where the energy saving actually comes from.
Watch for: Handover with default schedules and no explanation. An automation system nobody has tuned is an expensive timer, and this is the most commonly skipped part of the job.
Cost is driven by how many devices and valve actuators you are controlling, not by the panel alone, and by whether the wiring can be run without opening the deck. Doing it during a pad rebuild or remodel is considerably cheaper than doing it on its own.

For each piece of my equipment, what level of control will the system have?
Ask device by device. "Full control" as a blanket claim across a mixed-brand pad is rarely true and always the source of the disappointment.
Which valves are you fitting actuators to, and why those?
Actuators are motors outdoors with a finite life. Automating valves nobody moves adds cost and future failures for nothing.
Where is the panel mounted, and is it out of direct sun?
Heat and UV are the main killers of pad electronics, and siting is free before installation.
How is the controller getting a network connection?
Wi-Fi at an equipment pad is frequently marginal. A plan involving a wired run or a bridge is a better sign than "it connected fine today".
Does the system remain fully functional from the panel if the app or cloud service goes away?
The obsolescence question. A system that degrades gracefully to local control is worth more than one that does not.
Will you set up and explain the schedules, and revisit them after a season?
The schedules are the product. Handover on defaults is the most common way this purchase fails to pay for itself.
