The technical constraint is compatibility: controllers talk properly to their own manufacturer's equipment and less well to everyone else's.   1. Inventory the equipment and check what the controller can actually talk to

    A controller can switch almost anything on and off through a relay. What it cannot necessarily do is vary a third-party pump's speed, read a heater's status, or manage another manufacturer's salt cell.

  2. Decide what genuinely needs automating

  3. Mount the panel and run the wiring

  4. Electrical connection and bonding

  5. Network, app and account setup

When pool automation installation is the wrong call

When saying yes is the wrong move:
  • Your equipment is mostly third-party and cannot be properly integrated. On-off relay control of a pump you cannot vary and a heater you cannot read is not automation, it is a remote switch. Establish the integration list per device before buying.
  • The pad has no reliable network coverage and you will not fix it. The app is most of the value proposition. If the pad is at the bottom of the garden behind a masonry wall, solve connectivity first or buy a simpler local controller.
  • Your equipment is near the end of its life. Automating a pump and heater you will replace in two years means commissioning the system twice. Do the equipment first, the controller second.
  • Nobody in the household will engage with the schedules. The savings come from tuning speeds and hours. If it will be installed and never touched, you have bought a timer at a considerable premium.
  • You expect it to last as long as the pool. This is the honest one. Controllers, apps and cloud services have product lifecycles measured in years, and manufacturers do discontinue support. Ask what happens to your system if the app is retired, and prefer one that remains fully usable from the panel itself.

What to check when hiring for pool automation installation

  • For each piece of my equipment, what level of control will the system have? Ask device by device. "Full control" as a blanket claim across a mixed-brand pad is rarely true and always the source of the disappointment.
  • Which valves are you fitting actuators to, and why those? Actuators are motors outdoors with a finite life. Automating valves nobody moves adds cost and future failures for nothing.
  • Where is the panel mounted, and is it out of direct sun? Heat and UV are the main killers of pad electronics, and siting is free before installation.
  • How is the controller getting a network connection? Wi-Fi at an equipment pad is frequently marginal. A plan involving a wired run or a bridge is a better sign than "it connected fine today".
  • Does the system remain fully functional from the panel if the app or cloud service goes away? The obsolescence question. A system that degrades gracefully to local control is worth more than one that does not.
  • Will you set up and explain the schedules, and revisit them after a season? The schedules are the product. Handover on defaults is the most common way this purchase fails to pay for itself.

At its core: pump speed and run times, heater setpoint and windows, lighting including colour scenes on compatible fixtures, salt cell output, and motorised valves for switching between pool and spa or turning water features on. Some systems also read water chemistry through sensors. What any given system controls in your pool, though, depends entirely on which equipment it can talk to properly - which is why the device-by-device question matters more than the feature list.
Not strictly, but it is much easier when it matches. Controllers are designed to communicate with their own manufacturer's pumps, heaters and salt cells, giving genuine control - variable pump speeds, heater status, cell output. Third-party equipment usually ends up on a relay, which means on and off only. That may be perfectly adequate for a light or a booster pump, and completely inadequate for the variable-speed pump you were hoping to schedule.
It can, and the mechanism is specific: it lets a variable-speed pump run slowly for long periods instead of fast for short ones, and it stops the heater running when nobody is going to swim. Both are real savings. But they come from the schedules being tuned, not from the box being installed. A system left on factory defaults saves very little, and that is the usual outcome when nobody sets it up properly at handover.
Often yes, and it is a common retrofit. The practical questions are whether control wiring can be run from the panel to each device without opening finished hardscape, whether the equipment is modern enough to be controlled meaningfully rather than just switched, and whether the electrical arrangement at the pad can accommodate the controller. If a remodel or a pad rebuild is anywhere on your horizon, doing the automation at the same time is significantly cheaper.
This is the question worth asking hardest, and it is the one difference between automation and every other thing on your equipment pad. Manufacturers do retire apps, cloud platforms and controller lines. The good outcome is a system that keeps working fully from its own panel and simply loses remote access; the bad one is a controller whose scheduling depends on a service that no longer exists. Ask the installer directly, and prefer the system that degrades gracefully.
