What is pool resurfacing?

Resurfacing replaces the interior finish of a concrete pool - the plaster, quartz or pebble layer that sits on the shell - without touching tile, coping, deck or equipment. The old finish is removed back to sound substrate, the surface is prepared and bonded, the new finish is applied, and the pool is refilled and started up on a specific schedule. It is a defined job with a defined crew, and the two things that decide whether it lasts are the preparation underneath and the water chemistry afterwards.

Signs you need pool resurfacing

• The surface feels rough or chalky underfoot and leaves a residue on your hand when you rub it
• There are spreading areas where the finish has flaked or delaminated and you can see darker substrate beneath
• Staining and mottling no longer respond to brushing, acid washing or chemical treatment
• Exposed aggregate or bare patches have appeared in the deep end or around the returns
• Your chemical consumption has crept up because a deteriorating surface is harder to keep balanced and harder to keep clean
• The pool has become noticeably harder to keep algae-free in the same spots, which is often texture rather than chemistry

How pool resurfacing actually works

1. 1

   Assessment - is it the finish, or the shell?

   A crew should distinguish between a worn finish on a sound shell and a finish failing because the structure beneath is cracked, moving or leaking. Those are different jobs with different prices.

   Watch forA quote given from photographs. Surface condition, waterline behaviour and whether the pool is losing water all need to be established on site before anyone commits to a price.

2. 2

   Drain-down, planned around groundwater

   The pool is drained deliberately, with attention to the water table and to how long the shell will sit empty. In some soils and seasons this needs dewatering or timing rather than just opening a valve.

   Watch forDraining without any thought for hydrostatic pressure. An empty pool in saturated ground is the classic way to damage a structure that was perfectly fine the day before.

3. 3

   Removal and preparation - the part that decides everything

   The old finish is chipped off or hydro-blasted back to sound material, hollow and delaminated areas are cut out, and the substrate is cleaned, etched and bonded ready to take the new layer.

   Watch forNew finish applied over old. It is faster, it is cheaper, and it is the reason resurfacing jobs fail early. Ask explicitly whether the existing finish is being removed or coated over, and get the answer in the contract.

   Repairs and details before the finish goes on

   Cracks, hollow spots, tile line, main drain covers, light niches and return fittings are addressed while the pool is empty and accessible.

   Watch forDrain covers left as they are. Suction outlets are a life-safety item with specific requirements, and an empty pool is exactly the moment to confirm yours meets the current standard. Ask your contractor what applies.

5. 5

   Application, fill and the start-up schedule

   The finish is applied and troweled, then the pool is filled continuously without stopping, and a start-up routine of brushing and chemistry begins immediately and runs for weeks.

What does pool resurfacing cost?
