  1. Establish what you actually have and what you actually want

    A good installer starts by correcting the premise: this is still a chlorine pool, and you will still test and balance water. What you are buying is automation of the dosing, not the elimination of chemistry.

  2. Survey the pool and its surroundings for salt-sensitive materials

    Salt water is harder than fresh on some metals and some porous stone. Handrails, ladders, light rings, fasteners, coping, natural stone decking and certain heater heat exchangers are the things to look at before, not after.

When saying yes is the wrong move:
  • You believe you are getting a chemical-free pool. You are getting an on-site chlorine generator. You will still test water, still balance pH - which salt systems tend to push upward - and still shock the pool occasionally. If the goal was to stop doing chemistry, this is not it.
  • Your pool is surrounded by salt-sensitive stone or metal you are not replacing. Some natural stone coping and decking, and untreated metal fittings, do not enjoy years of saline splash-out. Have someone look at your specific materials before you commit.
  • Your heater has an incompatible heat exchanger. Some older heaters do not tolerate saline water well. Check the model against the manufacturer's guidance first - discovering it afterwards is an expensive way to learn.
  • You have an older plaster finish already near the end of its life. Converting shortly before a resurfacing means paying to salt water that is about to be drained. Sequence the two.
  • The economics are the whole reason. The savings on chlorine are offset by cell replacement and by the electricity the cell uses. For many pools it is roughly a wash, and the real reason to convert is water feel and convenience. Ask what a replacement cell costs for the unit being quoted.
  • You are on a septic system or have restrictions on discharging saline water. Backwashing and eventual draining put saline water somewhere. Check what your locality and your own drainage arrangement allow before you salt the pool.
