Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523Walks, apron strips and public-facing paths: the surfaces that turn green, slick and complained-about. Get matched with crews who clean for traction and appearance — and who know where private property ends.
Sidewalk cleaning is the high-pressure flatwork job applied to narrow, public-facing walks — the strip from street to door, HOA paths, and side returns where shade grows a slick film. Sound concrete tolerates mechanical cleaning with a surface cleaner sized for the width; the job is short in area but high in consequence because wet algae on a walk is a slip hazard, not only a cosmetic complaint. Quotes often run by linear frontage rather than driveway square footage.

Confirm ownership and access
Private apron, city sidewalk, HOA common path or a mix — the crew needs to know which surface they are authorised to treat and whether equipment can stage without blocking a public right-of-way.
Watch for: A crew that does not ask. Cleaning a municipal walk without permission, or washing slurry into a storm inlet that your city regulates, can become your problem after they leave.
Treat the film that makes it slick
Biological growth is pre-treated where it is established, then the walk is cleaned with a compact surface cleaner or careful wand work at edges so the cement paste lightens evenly.
Watch for: A bare wand striped down a long narrow walk. On a path you see every pass underfoot — striping is more obvious than on a wide driveway.
Control runoff at the curb and drains
Wash water is directed away from basements, flower beds and storm drains according to local rules. Sidewalk jobs sit closer to the street infrastructure than a back patio does.
Watch for: Slurry pushed straight into a grated inlet. Many cities treat that as illicit discharge when detergents or heavy solids are involved.
Detail joints, transitions and steps
Expansion joints, curb cuts, step treads and the garage apron junction get hand attention so algae is not left in the places feet land hardest.
Watch for: Only the open middle cleaned. Growth lives in the shaded joint lines and the riser faces of steps.
Walk it wet for traction, not only colour
When the crew finishes, the success check is whether the surface feels grippy under a damp sole as much as whether it photographs lighter.
Watch for: A polish-smooth finish left on old, soft concrete that was over-blasted. Lighter is not safer if the surface is glazed.
Sidewalk work is usually a modest flat fee or a per-linear-foot line, driven by length, shading and access more than raw area. Pre-treatment for heavy algae and step detailing add. See the Cost Guide for how exterior cleaning quotes are structured.

Everyone else ranking for this is paid when you say yes. Here's when you shouldn't.
A narrow walk tempts a quick rental machine and a zero-degree tip. That tip can cut skin and etch a stripe you walk every day. Keep the tip fan-wide, wear closed shoes and eye protection, and never work a wand while standing on a ladder over steps.
Is this walk private, municipal or HOA — and are you covered to work on it?
Ownership is the first risk on sidewalk jobs, not PSI.
Will you use a surface cleaner sized for the width, or a wand only?
Wand-only on a long walk is how permanent zebra stripes appear under every footstep.
Where does the wash water go?
Curb, lawn, storm inlet or recovery — you want a deliberate answer.
Are steps, apron and side returns in the price?
The "sidewalk" people complain about is often three surfaces sold as one photo.
What will not come clean — and will you say so before starting?
Embedded tannin and decades of wear will not go uniform; honesty beats a dispute at the curb.
Do you carry liability insurance for work adjacent to public ways?
Pedestrian traffic and trip claims change the insurance conversation versus a back patio.
