Quick answer: Roofing is the third-deadliest civilian occupation in the United States - a fatal injury rate of 48.7 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers in 2024 against 3.3 for all occupations, with roughly 84% of roofer deaths caused by falls (BLS CFOI data). Trained crews with harnesses and anchors produce that number. A homeowner with none of those has strictly worse odds, which is why nearly every item on this checklist is designed to be done from the ground.
Most roof safety pages are written for contractors. This one is written for the person who owns the house - the one deciding whether to climb up, and the one responsible for who’s standing underneath while somebody else does.

Start with the number that should change your mind
The Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks fatal work injuries by occupation every year. In 2024, roofers recorded 104 deaths at a rate of 48.7 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers. That is roughly fifteen times the all-occupations rate of 3.3, and about five times the construction-industry average. Only logging workers (110.4) and fishing and hunting workers (88.8) rank higher.
The cause is not exotic. Around 84% of roofer deaths in 2023 were falls, slips and trips.
Here’s what makes that statistic relevant to you rather than to an industry: those deaths happen to people who do this every working day, who own harnesses, who set anchors, who work under OSHA’s residential fall protection requirements. The rate is that high with the mitigations in place.

What you can safely do from the ground
This is the honest list of homeowner roof tasks, and it covers most of what routine care actually requires.
- Full visual inspection of every slope with 8x or 10x binoculars
- Photograph each slope at maximum zoom and file the images by date
- Check ridge lines and valleys for straightness and debris
- Look at flashing, pipe boots and vents for obvious cracking or displacement
- Check fascia and soffit for rot, staining and pest entry
- Watch gutters and downspouts during a real rainfall to find blockages
- Check splash blocks and downspout extensions
- Look for granule accumulation at downspout outlets
- Inspect the attic for daylight, staining, damp insulation and rusted nail tips
- Check ceilings and upper-floor walls for new stains
- Use a roof rake from the ground to pull snow off the lower slope
- Note anything unclear and book a professional inspection instead of climbing

Ladder safety: the rules professionals actually work to
If you’re going up a ladder at all - for gutters, for a closer look at the eave - use the standard OSHA holds construction crews to. It exists because ladders are where a large share of serious falls begin.
Before you set it
- Inspect for cracked rails, bent rungs, loose hardware, missing feet
- Confirm the duty rating exceeds your weight plus anything you carry
- Check that the ground is firm, level and dry
- Clear the base area of hoses, tools and slick surfaces
- Check overhead for power lines - treat every line as live
- Never use a metal ladder anywhere near electrical service
Setting it up
- Extend the side rails at least 3 feet above the upper landing surface, or fit a grasping device (OSHA 1926.1053(b)(1))
- Set the base so the horizontal distance from the top support to the feet is about one quarter of the working length (1926.1053(b)(5)(i))
- Secure the ladder against accidental displacement - tie it off at the top
- Do not place it in a doorway or walkway without blocking that path
- Confirm the feet are fully seated and the ladder does not rock
Climbing and working
- Face the ladder and maintain three points of contact
- Carry nothing in your hands - hoist tools separately
- Keep your belt buckle between the rails; move the ladder rather than reaching
- Never stand on the top two rungs
- Have a second person on site, aware you are up there
- Come down before you get tired, not after
Never
- Never use a ladder in wind or on ice
- Never step off the ladder onto a roof surface as part of routine maintenance
- Never let a child or pet near the base
Conditions that end the job, whoever is doing it
Weather and surface conditions cause more falls than lack of skill does. These are stop conditions, not judgment calls.
- Wet, frosty or icy surface - stop
- Morning dew still on the shingles - stop
- Moss or algae growth on the slope - stop, it is as slick as ice
- Wind above a light breeze, or gusting at all - stop
- Rain in the forecast within the working window - stop
- High heat softening asphalt shingles - stop; you damage the roof and lose grip
- Fading light or any work after dusk - stop
- Any storm in the last 24 hours, including lightning within 10 miles - stop
- Snow or accumulated debris hiding the surface - stop
- Any sponginess underfoot suggesting rotted decking - stop immediately and get off
- Working alone with nobody aware - stop
- Fatigue, illness, medication, or any balance or cardiac condition - stop
The jobs no homeowner should attempt
Being straight about this is the point of the page. These are not “be careful” tasks. They are professional tasks.
- Any tear-off or re-roofing work
- Any repair requiring you to work near a roof edge
- Chimney, wall or valley flashing replacement
- Anything on a slope steeper than roughly 6-in-12 - check yours with the roof pitch calculator
- Anything on a second story or higher
- Anything on tile or slate, which break underfoot and are lethal to walk
- Anything on wet or moss-covered metal
- Structural repair, decking replacement or rafter work
- Skylight removal, resealing or replacement
- Ice dam removal by chipping or steaming
- Pressure washing a roof, which is dangerous and damages shingles
- Snow removal by climbing rather than raking
- Solar panel or satellite dish removal and reset
- Anything at all after a storm, before a professional has assessed the deck

The hazards that aren’t falls
Falls dominate the fatality statistics, but they are not the only way roof work hurts people. Run this list too.
Electrical. Overhead service drops run to the roofline on most houses, and a ladder or a length of drip edge reaches them easily.
- Locate the service drop before positioning anything
- Treat every line as live, insulated or not
- Use a fiberglass ladder near any electrical service, never aluminum
- Keep gutters, flashing and long tools well clear of lines
- Never work near lines in wind
Heat. Roof surfaces run far hotter than air temperature, and there is no shade.
- No roof work in peak afternoon heat
- Water before you feel thirsty, not after
- Watch for dizziness, cramps, or stopping sweating - all reasons to come down immediately
- Recognize that heat also softens asphalt, damaging the roof and reducing grip
Structural surprises. A roof that looks fine can have a compromised deck.
- Test for spongy footing before committing weight
- Assume any water-stained area of decking is weak
- Treat skylights and any covered opening as a fall-through hazard
- Never trust an unknown roof after a storm
Biological and chemical. Bird and bat droppings, wasp nests in soffits, and roof cleaning chemicals all have their own exposure profile.
- Check soffits and vents for nests before disturbing anything
- Wear gloves and eye protection for any debris handling
- Never mix roof cleaning products, and follow the label rather than advice
Debris on the ground. During a tear-off, the ground under the eaves is genuinely hazardous.
- Nails, shingle scraps and dropped tools land without warning
- Nobody walks the drop zone while work is overhead
- Closed-toe shoes anywhere near the site, for everyone
Four roof safety myths worth discarding
“It’s only one story.” A fall of ten or twelve feet onto concrete, or onto a landscaping edge, causes serious head and spinal injuries routinely. OSHA sets its fall protection trigger at six feet for a reason.
“I’ll be careful.” Care is not a control. Every fall statistic in this trade belongs to someone who intended to be careful. Systems - harnesses, anchors, guardrails, staying off the roof entirely - are controls.
“The roof isn’t slippery, it’s dry.” Morning dew, an invisible film of algae, loose granules acting like ball bearings, and a temperature-softened surface all reduce traction without looking wet. Granule loss in particular turns an aging asphalt roof into a gravel slope.
“I did it last time and it was fine.” Repetition without incident is not evidence of safety, it is exposure accumulating. The roof also changes: it ages, the deck softens, the surface loses grip.
Vetting the crew’s safety before they start
You are not the safety officer on your own house. But an unsafe crew is your problem in two ways: someone can be hurt on your property, and crews that cut safety corners generally cut installation corners too.
Before they start
- Certificate of workers’ compensation, ideally direct from their insurer
- Certificate of general liability, dates covering your project
- Confirmation that any subcontractors are covered too
- Named on-site supervisor and their phone number
- Agreed drop zone, dumpster location and material staging area
- Agreed daily start and stop times
- Confirmation that the site is secured overnight
What safe work looks like on day one
- Fall protection in use above six feet - harnesses clipped to rated anchors, guardrails or nets, per OSHA 1926.501
- Roof jacks or brackets on steeper pitches
- Ladders extended three feet above the eave and tied off
- Hard hats and eye protection worn
- Non-slip footwear
- Drop zone cordoned or clearly marked
- No one working under someone else
- Debris chuted or dropped into a controlled area, not thrown
What should worry you
- Harnesses worn but not clipped to anything
- No anchor points visible on a two-story house
- Crew members moving on a wet roof
- Nobody clearly supervising
- Material being thrown without a spotter below
- Nobody who speaks a common language with the lead

Protecting your household while work is happening

- Keep children indoors and away from windows facing the work
- Keep pets inside for the duration - noise and falling debris both
- Park vehicles well clear, not just out of the driveway
- Keep the drop zone empty of furniture, grills and planters
- Do not walk under the eaves to check on progress
- Warn neighbors of the dates and hours
- Expect the smoke alarm to react to dust
- Check the yard for nails every evening, not just at the end
- Confirm the magnet sweep before the final walk-through
After the job: the safety close-out

- Your own second sweep - crews miss the beds
- Check gutters for nails and shingle scraps
- Check the AC condenser and pool equipment for debris

The honest bottom line on roof safety
The cheapest roof inspection you will ever do costs about $30 for a pair of binoculars and an hour of your Saturday. The most expensive one starts with a ladder against a wet gutter.
Professional roofers do this work with training, equipment and insurance and still produce the third-highest occupational death rate in the country. That is not an argument for fear. It’s an argument for staying on the ground, doing the parts you can do well from there, and paying someone insured to do the rest.
