How this calculator works
No black box - this is the arithmetic the tool runs, written out.
pitch = rise / 12 angle = arctan(rise ÷ run) × 180 ÷ π area multiplier = √(1 + (rise ÷ run)²)
- rise
- How many inches the roof climbs vertically.
- run
- The horizontal distance that rise happens over - conventionally 12 inches.
- arctan
- The inverse tangent, which turns a slope ratio into an angle in degrees.
Roof pitch is written as a ratio out of 12: a roof that climbs 6 inches over 12 horizontal inches is "6/12". The trade uses this rather than degrees because you can measure it directly with a level and a tape, no protractor required.
The area multiplier falls out of the Pythagorean theorem. It is what the roof area calculator uses, and it is why a steeper roof costs more even on the same house - there is literally more roof.

Reading it: 6/12 is the most common residential pitch and the boundary of comfortable walkability for most crews. The 1.118 multiplier is what the area calculator applies to your footprint.
How the calculation runs
Four operations, in this order. Nothing is hidden behind a button.
- Take the rise in inches over a 12-inch run.
- Express it as the trade ratio, rise/12.
- Convert to degrees with the inverse tangent.
- Derive the area multiplier from the same triangle.
Roof pitch multipliers
A sloped roof has more surface than the ground it covers. This is the multiplier for every common pitch, applied to a 2,000 sq ft footprint - and it is the step most DIY estimates skip.

Steeper costs more twice over: there is literally more roof, and the crew works slower on it. That is why a 12/12 roof is not 41% more expensive than a flat footprint - it is more.
Getting your inputs right
The answer is only as good as what goes in. This is where estimates usually go wrong.
From inside the attic (easiest and safest)
Hold a level horizontally against the underside of a rafter. Measure 12 inches along it from where it touches, then measure straight up to the rafter. That distance in inches is your rise.
From a ladder at the eave
Same method against the roof surface, level held horizontal, 12 inches out, measure down to the roof. Do not go past the ladder.
Check more than one spot
Older homes settle and long rafters sag. Two or three readings tell you whether you have a consistent pitch or a tired one.
What changes your number
A calculator applies an average. These are the things that decide where in the range you actually land.
- Rise per 12 inches of run That is the entire input. Everything else - angle, multiplier, walkability - follows from it.
- Consistency across the roof Porches, additions, and gambrel profiles have their own pitches and need measuring separately.
Common mistakes
Every one of these is something people genuinely do, and most of them cost real money.
- Measuring on the shingle surface unevenly Architectural shingles are textured, and measuring off a raised tab throws the reading. Measure against a rafter where you can.
- Not holding the level level The whole method depends on that. A tilted level gives a confidently wrong pitch.
- Confusing pitch with slope terminology Roofers say "6/12", meaning rise over a 12-inch run. That is not the same convention as a percentage grade.
What roof pitch means

Where this stops being accurate
Measure the pitch in a few places. Older homes settle, and rafters sag; a roof that was framed at 6/12 can read 5.7/12 in the middle of a long span.

The terms on your quote, explained
A roofing quote is written in trade vocabulary. These are the words that actually change what you are paying for.
- Square
- 100 square feet of roof surface. The unit the entire trade orders, prices, and quotes in - a 2,400 sq ft roof is 24 squares.
- Pitch
- The slope, written as rise over a 12-inch run. A roof climbing 6 inches per 12 horizontal inches is "6/12".
- Decking (sheathing)
- The structural panels over the rafters that everything else fastens to. Its condition is unknown until the old covering is off.
- Underlayment
- The water-resistant layer between decking and covering. Synthetic or felt; it is the roof's second line of defense.
- Ice-and-water shield
- A self-adhering membrane at eaves and valleys that seals around fasteners. Commonly required by code in freeze-thaw climates.
- Flashing
- Metal that seals the joins - around chimneys, walls, valleys and vents. Most roof leaks are flashing failures, not covering failures.
