What is solar maintenance?
A grid-tied solar array has no moving parts and needs very little physical servicing. Real maintenance is three things: reading your monitoring often enough to notice a fault, planning for the inverter - the one component with a service life clearly shorter than the panels - and keeping serial numbers, install dates and warranty documents somewhere you can find them years later. Signs you need solar maintenance
- You have never logged into the monitoring portal, or no longer have the login the installer set up
- The monitoring gateway stopped reporting after you changed broadband providers or replaced your router
- Annual production has drifted down over several years and you have never checked whether it is one string or the whole array
- Your inverter is approaching the end of its stated warranty term and you have no plan for what happens next
- The system has been through hail, high wind or a heavy snow season and nobody has looked at it since
- You bought the house with the array already on it and inherited no documentation, serial numbers or warranty records
- A microinverter or optimiser has been flagged in the app for months and nobody has acted on it

How solar maintenance actually works
Set a production baseline and actually use it
The whole discipline rests on knowing what normal looks like for your system in each season. Record what a clear day in each month produces during the first full year. Afterwards, compare month against the same month in earlier years - comparing against last month mostly measures the changing sun angle.
Watch forAlerting that is switched off or routed to an email address you abandoned. Confirm alerts arrive somewhere you will read them, and test that by deliberately checking what the system sends you.
Panel-level and string-level fault checks
On a microinverter or optimiser design, each module reports individually, so a single failed unit is visible as one flat tile against a normal array. On a string design you get less resolution: a single degraded module can pull down everything on its string, and finding it needs string current and voltage measurements taken on site.
Watch forA string system that is uniformly a little low. Without panel-level data this is easy to dismiss as weather for years. If your array is string-based and production has drifted, ask for string-level measurements rather than accepting a visual inspection.
Inverter service life and planning the replacement
The inverter is the component most likely to need replacing during the life of the array, and its warranty term is normally shorter than the panel warranty. Treat its replacement as a scheduled event you budget for, not an emergency, and check whether the warranty is extendable before the original term expires.
Watch forDiscontinued models. When an inverter fails years after installation, a like-for-like replacement may no longer be made, and a different unit can force changes to monitoring or communications. Ask what the current replacement path for your specific model is while it is still working.
Physical inspection - mounts, conduit, connectors and wildlife
A periodic look covers fasteners and flashings, conduit and cable management, DC connector condition, and evidence of birds or rodents nesting under the array. Chewed wiring is a common cause of a string dropping out, and a fire risk as well as a production one.
Watch forLoose or unsupported cabling hanging into contact with the roof surface. It abrades, then it fails, then it becomes an electrical fault in a place nobody can see from the ground.
Warranty and document administration
Keep the module and inverter makes, models and serial numbers, the installation and permission-to-operate dates, the workmanship warranty, and the as-built layout diagram in one place. This is the single most valuable maintenance task and it takes an afternoon once.
Watch forDiscovering after a failure that the installing company has closed and you have no serial numbers. Manufacturer warranties usually survive an installer's closure; they are far harder to claim without the paperwork that identifies your equipment.
What does solar maintenance cost?
Annual service visits are priced as a call-out plus roof access, and plans bundle inspection with monitoring review. The expense that matters over a system's life is not the plan, it is the eventual inverter replacement - budget for that rather than for frequent visits.

When solar maintenance is the wrong call
When saying yes is the wrong move:
- Your system is new, panel-level monitored, and reporting cleanly. There is little for a technician to find that the data has not already told you. Read the app, keep the alerts on, and spend the money when something reports a fault.
- You are being sold an annual plan whose main item is panel washing. In most climates rain does the majority of that work, and where washing genuinely is needed it is roof-access work rather than solar service - price it separately through roof cleaning instead of inside a solar contract.
- The system is leased or under a PPA. Maintenance is the third-party owner's responsibility under almost every such agreement. Buying your own plan means paying twice, and letting your own contractor onto the equipment can breach the contract.
- The array is producing normally and you simply have not looked at it. Checking the monitoring costs nothing. Do that before buying a service that begins by checking your monitoring.
- Something has already failed. Then you need diagnosis and repair, not a maintenance plan - and buying a plan first rarely covers a fault that predates it. Read the exclusions before assuming a plan pays for the thing that is already broken.
- The roof under the array is due for replacement soon. Ongoing maintenance is a poor use of money when the array is coming off within a couple of years. Plan the removal, re-roof and re-set as one project.
What to check when hiring for solar maintenance
- What exactly is included in a visit, and what triggers an extra charge? Solar plans vary from a monitoring review to a full electrical inspection with string measurements. Get the scope written down so "annual service" means something specific.
- Will you take string-level electrical measurements, or only look at the array? On a string system a visual inspection cannot find a degraded module. Measurements can. This is the difference between a real inspection and a walk-round.
- Do you review my monitoring history, or only the day you visit? One clear afternoon proves very little. The trend across seasons is where a developing fault actually shows up.
- Will you record my equipment serial numbers and give me a copy? The most useful artefact any visit can produce, and the thing you will need if the manufacturer warranty is ever claimed.
- What is the replacement path for my specific inverter model today? Better answered while it works than after it fails. Models get discontinued, and successors can change how monitoring is wired.
- Does the plan cover parts, labour, or only inspection? Many plans are inspection only, which means the expensive part of any failure still lands on you. Know that before renewing.
- Is roof access, and any equipment needed for it, included in the price? On steep or high roofs, access is often the largest line on the invoice, and it is frequently quoted separately.
