What is solar maintenance?

A grid-tied solar array has no moving parts and needs very little physical servicing. Real maintenance is three things: reading your monitoring often enough to notice a fault, planning for the inverter — the one component with a service life clearly shorter than the panels — and keeping serial numbers, install dates and warranty documents somewhere you can find them years later. How solar maintenance actually works

  1. Set a production baseline and actually use it

    The whole discipline rests on knowing what normal looks like for your system in each season. Record what a clear day in each month produces during the first full year. Afterwards, compare month against the same month in earlier years — comparing against last month mostly measures the changing sun angle.

    Watch for: Alerting that is switched off or routed to an email address you abandoned. Confirm alerts arrive somewhere you will read them, and test that by deliberately checking what the system sends you.

  2. Panel-level and string-level fault checks

    On a microinverter or optimiser design, each module reports individually, so a single failed unit is visible as one flat tile against a normal array. On a string design you get less resolution: a single degraded module can pull down everything on its string, and finding it needs string current and voltage measurements taken on site.

    Watch for: A string system that is uniformly a little low. Without panel-level data this is easy to dismiss as weather for years. If your array is string-based and production has drifted, ask for string-level measurements rather than accepting a visual inspection.

  3. Inverter service life and planning the replacement

    The inverter is the component most likely to need replacing during the life of the array, and its warranty term is normally shorter than the panel warranty. Treat its replacement as a scheduled event you budget for, not an emergency, and check whether the warranty is extendable before the original term expires.

    Watch for: Discontinued models. When an inverter fails years after installation, a like-for-like replacement may no longer be made, and a different unit can force changes to monitoring or communications. Ask what the current replacement path for your specific model is while it is still working.

  4. Physical inspection — mounts, conduit, connectors and wildlife

    A periodic look covers fasteners and flashings, conduit and cable management, DC connector condition, and evidence of birds or rodents nesting under the array. Chewed wiring is a common cause of a string dropping out, and a fire risk as well as a production one.

    Watch for: Loose or unsupported cabling hanging into contact with the roof surface. It abrades, then it fails, then it becomes an electrical fault in a place nobody can see from the ground.

  5. Warranty and document administration

    Keep the module and inverter makes, models and serial numbers, the installation and permission-to-operate dates, the workmanship warranty, and the as-built layout diagram in one place. This is the single most valuable maintenance task and it takes an afternoon once.

    Watch for: Discovering after a failure that the installing company has closed and you have no serial numbers. Manufacturer warranties usually survive an installer's closure; they are far harder to claim without the paperwork that identifies your equipment.

With no moving parts, the meaningful cadence is a monthly glance at the monitoring, an annual comparison against the same month in previous years, and a physical inspection every few years or after a severe weather event. Systems with panel-level monitoring need on-site attention least, because the data reports faults you would otherwise have to go looking for.
The inverter is the component you should expect to replace at least once during the life of the array, and its warranty term is normally shorter than the panel warranty — that difference is the industry telling you what it expects. Plan and budget for it as a scheduled item. Check well in advance whether an extended warranty can be bought before the original term runs out, because most cannot be added afterwards.

That is a separate job from electrical maintenance and often a separate trade, because the hard part is safe roof access rather than anything to do with the solar equipment. In most climates rainfall handles ordinary soiling. Where it does not — persistent dust, pollen, agricultural or industrial deposits, bird fouling — treat it as roof-access work and price it through roof cleaning services rather than inside a solar contract.
