Solar warranties

We deliberately do not publish specific brand warranty terms here, because they change by model and by year and getting them wrong could cost you thousands. Ask for the manufacturer's own warranty PDF for the exact model quoted, and read the term length, what triggers a claim, and who pays for labor and shipping on a replacement.

The workmanship warranty is the one most likely to matter and the one most likely to evaporate. It covers installation labor and roof penetrations, and it is backed only by the installing company. If that company closes, the warranty is generally worthless even though your manufacturer warranties survive. This is a strong argument for choosing an installer with a long local track record over whoever gives the cheapest bid.

Also ask specifically about labor coverage on a manufacturer claim. A panel or inverter warranty may cover the replacement part but not the cost of sending a crew and equipment to swap it. And ask whether the warranties transfer to a new homeowner, and whether transferring costs a fee.

How to choose

Collect all three warranty documents before signing

Manufacturer product warranty, manufacturer performance warranty, and installer workmanship warranty. If any is missing, that is the answer.

Check whether labor is covered

A free replacement part with a billable service call is a much weaker warranty than it sounds.

Ask about transferability

Confirm in writing that warranties pass to a future buyer, and whether there is a transfer fee or registration deadline.

Weigh installer longevity

A workmanship warranty is a promise from one company. Company age, local presence and financial stability matter more than the number of years printed on the certificate.

Register your equipment

Some manufacturer warranties require registration within a set window. Do it yourself rather than assuming the installer did.
