Is the federal solar tax credit still available in 2026?

Not for systems you buy. The IRS states the Section 25D Residential Clean Energy Credit is not allowed for expenditures made after December 31, 2025, and treats an expenditure as made when installation is completed. A third party that owns a leased system may still claim a commercial credit - but you do not claim 30% on your personal return for a purchased 2026 install.

Cost and pricing

Hiring and quotes

At least three, including at least one local installer. National brands often subcontract the crew - check the installing company’s license and reviews, not just the brand on the proposal.

No. Same-day discounts are a sales technique. A genuine price is still there in a week. Kitchen-table pressure is one of the most reliable predictors of buyer regret in this industry.
Ask for the installing company’s legal name. Many national sales organizations subcontract. Verify that entity’s license and insurance. Workmanship warranties are only as good as the company that wrote them.
It depends on whether the contract guarantees production and what assumptions were disclosed (shading, weather, utility rates). Document actual production from monitoring, then read the performance and workmanship warranties. Many “estimates” are not guarantees.
Not automatically - a third-party owner may still access commercial tax benefits and pass some value into the payment. But you own nothing, escalators can erode savings, and transfer clauses matter when you sell. Read the full term, not the first-year payment.

The work itself

Physical install on a typical home is usually days. Full timeline from contract to switched-on is driven by permitting and utility interconnection, which vary enormously by jurisdiction and utility. Permission to operate is often the longest step.
If the roof is near end of life, replace it before installing. Panels last decades; paying to remove and reinstall later is a common, avoidable expense. Get removal/reinstall pricing in writing even if you install now.
Microinverters generally handle shading and mixed orientations better and give per-panel data; string inverters are simpler and often cheaper but a single point of failure. Match the choice to your roof and compare written warranty terms on the exact models quoted.
Only if roof space limits system size. If you have room, a larger array of standard panels often costs less for the same annual kWh. Do not pay a large efficiency premium without a space constraint.
Properly flashed mounts should not. Leaks come from bad workmanship at penetrations. Installer workmanship warranty and flashing method matter more than panel brand for roof risk.
The utility’s final approval to switch on a grid-tied system after local inspection and interconnection paperwork. Passing city inspection alone is not PTO. Do not energize early.

Problems and emergencies

Shading growth, dirt, inverter faults, monitoring gaps, weather variance, or an optimistic sales estimate. Check the monitoring app first, then call the installer with dates and screenshots. Compare against the proposal’s assumptions, not a round marketing number.
Not with standard grid-tied solar alone - systems shut down for utility worker safety. Backup requires a battery and the correct inverter configuration. If outage backup is your goal, size the battery to specific circuits and hours.
Manufacturer product and performance warranties usually follow the equipment; workmanship warranties often die with the company. Independent solar repair firms service orphaned systems in most metros for a fee. Prefer manufacturer-hosted monitoring when possible.
Some jurisdictions allow owner-builder permits, but you still need code-compliant electrical work, inspection, and utility interconnection. Mistakes affect insurance and the roof. For most homeowners this is a poor DIY project.
Start with the installer’s workmanship warranty for penetrations, and document with photos. If the installer is gone, a roofer experienced with solar mounts and a solar service firm may both be needed. Do not ignore active leaks.

After the job, warranty and maintenance

Three separate ones: manufacturer product, manufacturer performance (minimum output over time), and installer workmanship (labor and roof penetrations). Get all three PDFs before signing. They have different lengths and different companies behind them. See solar warranties.
Often not fully. A free replacement part with a billable service call is a weaker warranty than it sounds. Ask specifically who pays labor and equipment rental for a swap in year eight.

Owned systems generally help; leased systems and PPAs must transfer to a qualified buyer and can complicate closing. If you may move, read the transfer and buyout clauses before you sign - not when you list.
A loan is normally yours to pay off, often at closing. A lease or PPA must be assumed or bought out under the contract terms. Ask the lender or lessor for the payoff and transfer process in writing before listing.

Uncomfortable questions worth asking

No. Projections use utility rate assumptions and escalators chosen to sell. Ask for the kWh production estimate, the rate assumptions, and a sensitivity if rates grow slower. Verify export rules with your utility, not the sales deck.
Sales overhead, dealer fees on financing, battery bundling, electrical upgrades, and warranty packaging. Compare cash $/W and model numbers, not brand slogans.
It depends on the contract and state law. Many keep costs already incurred; some in-home sales have cooling-off rights. Read cancellation terms before you sign, and beware large deposits before permits clear.
You can refuse. Require written change orders with price before any added work. Mid-process upsells are common once you are emotionally committed to a start date.

What incentives apply to my address?

Can my HOA stop the install?

It depends on state law and your HOA documents. Many states limit HOA bans, but notice rules and aesthetic guidelines still apply. Get the HOA’s written policy and check your state statute.

What system size does my house need?

It depends on your kWh usage, roof area and orientation, shading, and goals (offset bills vs partial). A site assessment with your actual utility bills is required - online averages are not a design.
