Sistering means fastening a new member alongside an existing joist so the two act together. It is the standard remedy for a joist that has split, sagged, been notched or has rotted in part — and it is genuinely effective when the new member runs the full working length and bears properly at both ends. That is the whole condition. A sister that stops short and terminates in mid-air over nothing transfers very little; it looks like a repair from below and behaves like a cosmetic one.
Establish what the existing joist has actually lost
A split along the grain, a notch cut for a pipe, a rotted bearing end and a joist never deep enough for its span are four different conditions. Sistering addresses some well and others hardly at all. Before material is bought, someone should say what the failure is and what the repaired assembly needs to carry.
Watch for: Sistering chosen because it is the method everyone knows. Popularity is not a diagnosis, and it is the reason this repair is so often applied to problems it cannot fix.
Decide where the new member starts and stops
The crux of the whole method. To share load meaningfully the sister must reach supports — the wall, sill, beam or hanger the original bears on — or be supported by something equivalent an engineer has specified. The temptation on a real job is to fit a shorter, more manageable piece over just the damaged area, because the long one will not go in past the ductwork. That shorter piece has no path for the load it collects.
Watch for: A sister that ends over open space. It is the single most common defect in this repair, it is easy to see from below once you know to look, and it is why the floor still moves after the job is finished.
Deal with the obstructions, because they are the real job
Between you and a full-length sister there is typically a duct trunk, a waste pipe, a water line, a cable run and a row of blocking. This is where real jobs go wrong: the member will not slide in, so it gets cut, notched or shortened — and every one of those removes capacity from the piece meant to add it. The honest options are relocating the services, building the member up in place, or a different repair.
Watch for: Notching the new sister to clear the same pipe that damaged the original. The repair now contains the identical weakness, in the identical spot, and nobody will remember why.
Get the original back to shape first, if it is going to be
A sagging joist is often lifted gradually before the sister is fixed, so the pair starts from a straighter position. Gradual matters: everything above has settled into the sagged shape and will complain if moved back quickly. Some deflection is permanent set that will not come out at all.
Watch for: A jack cranked hard in one session. Tile cracks, drywall tears, and occasionally a plumbing joint parts inside a wall where nobody will find it until it stains a ceiling.
Fastening — engineered, not eyeballed
The two members only act together if the connection between them transfers load along their whole length. Fastener type, size, spacing and pattern are engineered values, specified by an engineer or by the connector manufacturer's published tables for the exact product used. We deliberately publish no numbers here: a schedule copied off a web page and applied to a different floor is precisely how this repair fails quietly.
Watch for: A pattern chosen from memory or from a video. Ask where the schedule came from. "This is how we always do it" is not a source.
Bearing at the ends, and hangers where they belong
Where the sister lands matters as much as how far it runs. Full bearing on a sill, wall or beam is the straightforward case. In a hanger, the hanger must suit the member and be fully fastened — one with empty holes is not the hanger that was tested. And where the original rotted at its bearing, that bearing needs attention too, or the sister sits on the same failure.
Watch for: A sister butted up short of the bearing so the original alone still carries at the end — which is the end that was rotten in the first place.
Materially cheaper than replacing a joist when access is good and nothing has to move. What changes the number is not the timber — it is relocating services, poor crawl-space access, jacking time, and reinstating insulation, ductwork and ceilings afterwards. Ask for those as separate lines.

Floor framing carries the people, furniture and finishes above it. A joist that has already failed once has redistributed its load onto its neighbours, and jacking or unloading it changes what everything nearby is carrying. If more than one joist is involved, if the damage is at a bearing point, if the joist supports a bearing wall or anything heavy above, or if you are unsure what the member carries — that is an engineer's determination before it is anyone's carpentry.
How far will the sister run, and what does each end bear on?
The question the whole method turns on. A confident, specific answer naming both supports is what you want. Anything vague means the length has not been resolved and will be decided by whatever fits on the day.
Who specified the fastener schedule, and can I see the source?
It should trace to an engineer or the connector manufacturer's published instructions for that exact product. "How we always do it" is not a source, and this connection is what makes two boards one member.
What is in the way, and what has to move to get the member in?
Surfaces the real cost driver before it becomes a change order, and tells you whether they went under the floor or quoted from the doorway.
Are you jacking the joist, how far, and over how long?
Rate matters more than force. A plan measured in days is a plan; one measured in an afternoon is how tile cracks.
Who reinstates the insulation, ductwork, vapour barrier and ceiling?
The classic omission. Framing gets quoted, reinstatement gets assumed, and the gap surfaces when you have no leverage left.
Will you leave it open for inspection before anything is covered?
The bearing and the fastening are the two things worth verifying, and they are the first two things to disappear behind insulation.
