Stump removal in the excavation sense means digging or machine-lifting the stump and the primary root plate out of the ground, hauling the wood away, and backfilling the void. It is not a synonym for stump grinding. Grinding pulverises wood in place; extraction empties a crater. You buy extraction when buried wood would compromise what you plan to build or plant in that exact footprint.

Define the removal envelope in writing
Depth, radial extent of roots to be taken, and whether surface laterals beyond the plate are included. “Remove the stump” without dimensions is how disputes start when laterals remain and the builder refuses the pad.
Watch for: A lump-sum with no depth or radius. Excavation scope is a volume problem; volume must be specified.
Utility locate and protection plan
Full digs intersect irrigation, gas, electric, telecom and sewer laterals more aggressively than a shallow grind. Locates and hand-dig zones near known lines are mandatory planning, not optional caution before the bucket hits soil.
Watch for: Machine digging the day of the quote with no locate ticket. Extraction without locates is how service outages become your afternoon.
Excavate, sever and extract
Equipment exposes the plate, major roots are cut, and the mass is lifted or broken into haulable pieces. Access for a mini-excavator or larger machine often decides feasibility more than stump diameter alone, so gate width and swing room belong in the quote walk.
Watch for: Promising full plate removal through a gate that will not pass the machine. Access engineering comes before price confidence.
Haul wood and unsuitable soil
Extracted wood, tangled roots and often contaminated back-spoil leave the site. Volume is routinely larger than homeowners picture from the stump’s visible diameter, which is why dump fees surprise people who budgeted only for “pulling a stump.”
Watch for: Assuming haul-away is free or minor. Trucking is a real line on excavation jobs.
Backfill, compact and finish grade
The hole is rebuilt in lifts with suitable fill, not with wood chips. Settlement still happens; finish grade may need a return visit before paving or precise landscaping, and structural fill standards should match what the next trade will put on top.
Watch for: Backfilling with grindings or random spoil and calling it done. That is not engineered support for a slab or pool deck.
Full stump excavation costs substantially more than grinding — often several times a grind quote on the same stem — because of machine time, haul-away and backfill. Price scales with diameter, root spread, access and how clean the void must be for construction. Get both methods quoted when the end use is unclear.

Everyone else ranking for this is paid when you say yes. Here's when you shouldn't.
Is this excavation of the root plate, or grinding marketed as “removal”?
Many quotes say removal and mean grind. Force the method into the written scope.
What depth and radius of root removal are included?
Builders care about the envelope. So should you if anything structural follows.
What backfill material and compaction standard will you use?
For construction pads this matters as much as getting the wood out.
Who called utility locates, and what is hand-dug near marked lines?
Extraction without a locate plan is negligence dressed as efficiency.
How is spoil and wood hauled, and is dump pricing included?
Volume surprises are the usual change-order on dig-outs.
What restoration of lawn, irrigation and hardscape is in scope?
A clean hole can still leave a wrecked yard. Define the finish state.
If settlement appears after a few months, who returns and at whose cost?
Holes settle. The contract should say whether re-grading is included or extra.
