Excavate, sever and extract

Equipment exposes the plate, major roots are cut, and the mass is lifted or broken into haulable pieces. Access for a mini-excavator or larger machine often decides feasibility more than stump diameter alone, so gate width and swing room belong in the quote walk.

Watch for: Promising full plate removal through a gate that will not pass the machine. Access engineering comes before price confidence.
Haul wood and unsuitable soil

Extracted wood, tangled roots and often contaminated back-spoil leave the site. Volume is routinely larger than homeowners picture from the stump’s visible diameter, which is why dump fees surprise people who budgeted only for “pulling a stump.”

Watch for: Assuming haul-away is free or minor. Trucking is a real line on excavation jobs.
Backfill, compact and finish grade

The hole is rebuilt in lifts with suitable fill, not with wood chips. Settlement still happens; finish grade may need a return visit before paving or precise landscaping, and structural fill standards should match what the next trade will put on top.

Watch for: Backfilling with grindings or random spoil and calling it done. That is not engineered support for a slab or pool deck.

You only want the lawn mowable and the trip hazard gone. Grinding is the right product: cheaper, faster and less destructive to the surrounding yard.
You plan to re-turf or plant a small shrub, not build. A specified deep grind plus topsoil usually outperforms a construction-scale dig.
The stump stabilises a slope or bank. Pulling the plate without a retention plan can start an erosion problem larger than the stump.
Utilities or septic systems lace the root zone and cannot be isolated. Extraction risk may force grinding, redesign or professional utility coordination first.
Machine access is impossible without dismantling fences or driving through unrecoverable landscape. Hand excavation exists but can erase the economic case for full removal.

A clean hole can still leave a wrecked yard. Define the finish state.

Is stump removal the same as stump grinding?

No. Grinding uses a rotating wheel to chip the stump and upper roots to an agreed depth and leaves most of the root system in the soil. Removal by excavation takes the stump and primary root plate out, then requires real backfill. Landscapers and builders often say “removal” loosely — get the method in writing before you compare prices.

When do I actually need full extraction?

When something that cannot sit on decaying wood is going in that footprint: footings, pools, structural slabs, some underground utilities, or a specification that demands organic material removed. For lawns and gardens, grinding is usually enough and far less disruptive.

How big is the hole?

Larger than the stump looks. Root plates flare wide, and machines need working room. Expect a crater that needs layered fill, not a plug the size of the cut trunk — and budget spoil haul accordingly.

Can I plant a new large tree in the same hole after extraction?

You can, once the void is rebuilt with suitable soil and drainage is understood — but offsetting a few feet is still often smarter so the new roots explore undisturbed ground. If disease killed the previous tree, species choice matters more than hole perfection.

Will full removal stop suckers?
