What is walk in tub installation?
A walk-in tub is a bathtub with a watertight door in the side, so the bather steps over a low threshold instead of climbing over a tub wall, then sits on a built-in seat. Installation replaces your existing tub and usually touches plumbing, the floor, the surround and sometimes the water heater and an electrical circuit. The thing every brochure leaves out: the bather is in the tub, uncovered, while it fills and again while it drains. Whether that is acceptable decides the purchase more than any feature list does.

- Someone has stopped bathing as often as they would like because getting over the tub wall has become the hard part

How walk in tub installation actually works
An in-home assessment - of the bathroom and of the person
Someone measures the existing tub alcove, the door opening into the bathroom, the floor structure and where the drain and supply lines run. Just as important, and usually skipped: someone should watch how the person actually moves, and ask what they can do unaided.

Electrical, if there are jets, a heater or a powered drain
Air jets, water jets, an inline heater, a heated seat or a fast-drain pump all need power, and that generally means a dedicated GFCI-protected circuit run to the bathroom. A plain soaker tub with no powered features may not need any.

Setting the tub, sealing and the surround
The tub is levelled and set, plumbing is connected, the door and its seal are aligned, and the walls are closed back up. Levelling matters more here than on a standard tub: a tub set out of level puts uneven pressure on the door seal, and the seal is the component you will care about in five years.

Handover - and an actual trial with the person who will use it

When walk in tub installation is the wrong call
When saying yes is the wrong move:
- A curbless roll-in shower would serve the person better - and it often would. A no-threshold shower with a fold-down seat and a handheld sprayer lets someone bathe seated, lets a carer help from outside the wet area, and has no door seal to fail. - The bather cannot tolerate sitting through the fill and the drain. This is the defining limitation of the product and no brand engineering removes it. You get in, you close the door, and you sit there while the water rises - then, at the end, you sit in an emptying tub until it is low enough to open the door. Someone who gets cold easily, or who is anxious about being unable to leave, will find this genuinely unpleasant. Ask any dealer for the fill and drain times of the specific model, in your house, at your water pressure.
- The door seal is a wear part and you should plan for it. Seals compress, harden and eventually leak, and a leak in a walk-in tub is on the bathroom floor rather than inside the tub. Ask who services the seal, what it costs, and whether that brand will still be reachable in ten years. Several companies in this category have changed hands or stopped trading, leaving owners with a tub nobody supports.
- Resale value is usually neutral to negative. A walk-in tub reads to most buyers as a medical modification, and it occupies the space where a family bathroom expects a normal tub. If a sale is likely within a few years, that matters. Do not accept "it adds value to your home" as an answer - ask the person saying it to show you the evidence.
- The person's needs are progressing rather than stable. If mobility is declining, a fixture that requires stepping over any threshold and standing up from a seat may be outgrown quickly. A roll-in shower that accepts a shower chair, or a wheeled commode chair, will keep working further into that progression.
- Nobody has confirmed how it will be paid for. Coverage under Medicare, Medicaid waivers, VA programmes and long-term care policies is specific, plan-dependent and changes - a general "it may be covered" from a salesperson is not confirmation. Get it in writing from the plan itself before signing anything, and be sceptical of any financing arranged in your kitchen the same evening.

- Who replaces the door seal, what does it cost, and how long is it stocked for? The seal is the part that eventually fails. If the answer depends on the manufacturer still existing, ask how long they have been trading.
- Is this price available tomorrow? A legitimate contractor prices a bathroom the same on Tuesday as on Monday. A price that expires tonight tells you what kind of appointment you are in.
- What happens, and who pays, if there is rot or water damage under the old tub? Get the procedure in writing before demolition. Once the wall is open, your negotiating position is gone.
- Can the person who will use this tub try getting in and out before I sign? Showroom or install-day trial, but it must happen. Seat height and door-handle reach are individual, and a spec sheet cannot tell you.
- Am I signing a purchase contract or a financing agreement, and what is my cancellation window? In-home sales in this category frequently combine the two. Know which document you are signing, and take it away and read it somewhere that is not your own kitchen.
