Window financing

Window financing usually comes in three forms: contractor-arranged installment loans, general home improvement loans or HELOCs from your own bank, and credit cards. The number that matters is the total you repay, not the monthly payment. Always ask for the cash price alongside the financed price, because promotional financing is sometimes funded by a higher contract price.

Contractor financing is convenient and sometimes genuinely cheap, but it is arranged by the party selling you the job. Ask two questions in writing: what is the cash price, and what is the APR and term. If the cash price is meaningfully lower, the financing is not free.

Deferred-interest offers are the ones to read carefully. Some accrue interest from day one and charge all of it retroactively if the balance is not cleared inside the promotional window. That is different from a true 0% APR installment loan.

Your own bank or credit union is worth a call before you sign at the kitchen table. Home equity products typically carry lower rates than unsecured installment loans, but they put your home at risk, which an unsecured loan does not.

One 2026 planning note: the federal 25C tax credit that covered part of qualifying window costs applied through the end of 2025 per ENERGY STAR. Do not build a 2026 repayment plan around it. Utility and state rebates are separate — check with your own utility.

How to choose

Ask for the cash price first
Get the total for paying outright before any financing is discussed. It is your baseline.
Compare total repaid, not monthly
Multiply payment by term and add fees. A lower monthly payment over a longer term usually costs more.
Read deferred-interest terms literally
Find out whether interest accrues during the promotional period and what happens if one payment is late.
Shop your own lender in parallel
A credit union quote takes one phone call and gives you leverage on the dealer's offer.
Do not let financing set the scope
Buying more windows than you need because 'the payment is the same' is how a $9,000 job becomes a $22,000 one.

Not automatically. It becomes a bad deal when the cash price is lower than the financed contract price, or when a deferred-interest promotion is presented as 0% interest. Ask for both numbers in writing.
Rates are typically lower than unsecured loans, but the debt is secured by your home. That tradeoff is personal — talk to your own bank or a financial advisor, not the window salesperson.
The 25C credit for windows applied through the end of 2025 per ENERGY STAR. For a 2026 installation, check your state energy office and utility for their own programs and confirm anything tax-related with a tax professional.
Enough to cover ordering your custom units. Paying the full contract before installation removes all of your leverage.
