Window services

Window companies sell four different things: insert (pocket) replacement, full-frame replacement, glass-only or sash repair, and new-construction installation. Most homeowners who call about "new windows" need either an insert replacement or, if the frame and sill are rotted, a full-frame replacement. Glass-only repair is far cheaper and is the right answer when the frame is sound and only the sealed glass unit has failed.

In short

What window services actually cover

Insert replacement drops a new window into your existing frame. It is faster, cheaper, and leaves your interior and exterior trim alone. The tradeoff is a slightly smaller glass area, because the new frame sits inside the old one.

Full-frame replacement removes everything down to the rough opening. You need it when the sill, jambs, or surrounding wall are rotted or water-damaged, or when you are changing the window size or style. It costs more and involves trim and siding work.

Glass-only work is the one most companies will not lead with, because it is the smallest ticket. If your frame operates fine and the only complaint is fog or a crack, ask specifically whether the insulated glass unit (IGU) or sash can be replaced. A company that refuses to quote it is telling you something.

A common sales pattern in this trade is a long in-home presentation ending with a "today only" price. Treat that as a reason to get two more quotes, not fewer. Nothing about a window job expires overnight.

How to choose

Picking the right window job

The judgement calls that decide the bill, before anyone quotes you.

  1. Match the service to the failure

Fog between panes means a failed seal, not a failed window. Sticking or drafty sashes on a sound frame can often be repaired. Rot at the sill is the real trigger for full replacement.

  2. Ask who physically installs

Many national brands sell through dealers and subcontract the crew. Ask whether the installers are employees or subs, and who you call if a window leaks in year two.

  3. Insist on a written scope

The quote should say insert or full-frame, the frame material, the glass package, whether interior and exterior trim are included, and who handles disposal.

  4. Do not buy on payment size

If a salesperson steers the conversation to a monthly payment instead of the total price, ask for the cash price and the financing APR in writing before agreeing to anything.

  5. Phase the job if money is tight

Windows do not have to be done all at once. Doing the worst wall or the worst-facing elevation first is a legitimate strategy, though per-window pricing usually improves with volume.

Before you call anyone

The wrong service call is the expensive one

Most people booking window work are buying a diagnosis, not a job - and the trade you pick decides what diagnosis you get. Book the wrong specialist and you pay a call-out fee to be told it is somebody else's problem.

  • Describe the symptom What you can observe, and when it started. Not what you think it is.
  • Ask what the visit includes Whether the diagnostic fee is credited against the work is a question with a real answer.
  • Get the scope in writing A number with no line items cannot be compared to a second number.

Windows services - common questions

Still have a question? Talk to our team →

No. There is no technical reason to. You may get a better per-window price on a larger order, so ask each company how their pricing changes at different quantities, then decide.
Often yes. Fog between the panes means the insulated glass unit's seal has failed. On many windows the sealed glass unit or the whole sash can be swapped while keeping the frame. Ask for that quote explicitly.
Insert replacements are usually a same-day job for a handful of windows. Full-frame work takes longer because trim, flashing, and siding have to be rebuilt. Ask for a per-day window count in writing.
Either can be fine. What matters is who holds the labor warranty, whether the crew is employed or subcontracted, and whether the company will still be reachable in five years.
