The thing that actually decides whether someone keeps cooking is simpler: whether a hot, heavy pan ever has to be lifted and carried, and whether the things used daily can be reached without a stretch or a stoop.
An accessible kitchen is one a person can cook in independently — seated, standing with support, or working one-handed. The decisions that matter most are about reach and carrying: putting daily items between hip and shoulder, giving at least one work surface a seated approach, and arranging the sink, cooktop and oven so a heavy pan slides along a surface instead of being carried. Appliance and control choices follow from that.

Establish whether the person will cook seated, standing, or both
Everything follows from this. A seated cook needs clear space under at least one work surface and under the sink; a standing cook with limited endurance needs somewhere to perch and something to hold. Many households need both, at different times of day, which is a design brief rather than a compromise.
Watch for: A kitchen designed entirely for seated use for someone who mostly stands. Lowered counters that suit nobody standing are a common and expensive over-correction.
Design out the carrying
The genuinely hazardous moments are moving a pan of boiling water and taking a hot tray out of an oven. A sink adjacent to the cooktop lets a pan slide rather than be lifted; a wall oven at a chosen height with a landing surface immediately beside it means a tray never travels; a pull-out board below the oven does the same job cheaply.
Watch for: An island between the cooktop and the sink. It looks generous and it puts a gap in exactly the place a full pan has to cross.
Bring daily storage into the reachable band
Most kitchens store what is used daily either above shoulder height or on the floor of a base cabinet. Drawers instead of doors in base units, a single well-organised reachable shelf rather than four high ones, and pull-down or pull-out fittings where the budget allows, do more than any other single change.
Watch for: Pull-down wall units specified everywhere. They are useful and they need real hand strength to operate; try the actual mechanism before buying six of them.
Choose appliances for their controls and their door
Front-mounted controls remove the need to reach across a hot surface. A side-hinged or drawer-style oven avoids reaching over a hot dropped door. Induction cooktops stay cooler around the pan and shut off without a pan present — a genuine safety benefit for someone who may forget, and one that requires the right pans and adequate electrical supply.
Watch for: Touch controls that need a firm dry fingertip, and flat glass panels with no tactile feedback. For someone with reduced sensation or sight, physical controls with a detectable click are far better and are increasingly rare.
Sort the sink and the taps
A shallower sink bowl reduces how far someone has to lean; clear space beneath allows a seated approach, with the pipework insulated or panelled so nothing hot can be contacted by a knee. A single lever or touch tap can be worked with a wrist, a forearm or an elbow when hands are full or grip is poor.
Watch for: A deep double sink specified for looks. Leaning into a deep bowl is one of the most common reported difficulties in a kitchen and it is essentially unfixable afterwards.
Light the work surfaces, not the ceiling
Under-cabinet lighting directly onto the counter is worth more than any ceiling fitting, because a cook standing at the counter shades their own work. Contrast between the counter and its edge, and between the counter and what is being cut on it, matters as much as brightness.
Watch for: A single central ceiling light and a dark counter. Glossy dark stone reflects the light back and reads as depth, which is unhelpful for eyes that are changing.
Give the floor and the route room to work
Clear turning space, no thresholds between the kitchen and the rooms either side, and a slip-resistant floor that is still comfortable to stand on. If a walker or a chair is in use, the swing of the appliance doors and the width of the passage between the counter and the island are the constraints that decide the layout.
Watch for: An island that leaves just enough space when the dishwasher is shut. Check every door and drawer open at once, because that is when the kitchen is actually in use.
Get the trades and permits arranged around it
Moving a sink, adding circuits for induction, adding under-cabinet lighting and improving ventilation are licensed work with inspections. It is also the point where any structural change — removing a wall to gain turning space — needs a proper opinion rather than a reassurance.
Watch for: An induction cooktop specified without anyone checking the electrical panel has the capacity. It is a routine upgrade and it is not free, and finding out late reshapes the budget.
An accessible kitchen mostly costs what any kitchen costs — the accessibility choices are decisions rather than premiums. Where will a hot, full pan have to travel in this layout?
The question no kitchen designer asks and the one that most affects safety. If the answer involves crossing open floor, the plan needs changing.
Will there be a work surface that can be used seated, with clear space beneath?
One is usually enough, and without one a seated cook is working sideways at the edge of a counter, which is neither safe nor sustainable.
Can we try the pull-out and pull-down mechanisms before ordering?
They vary enormously in how much force and grip they need. Specifying them without testing is how expensive fittings end up unused.
What controls do these appliances have, and can they be operated without looking?
Flat touch panels are common and are hard for anyone with reduced sensation or sight. Tactile controls with front-mounted positions are worth hunting for.
Does the electrical panel support what you are specifying?
Induction and additional circuits may need a panel upgrade. Discovering that after cabinets are ordered reshapes the budget at the worst moment.
Will you check the clearances with every door and drawer open?
Kitchens are measured closed and used open. It is the single most common source of a plan that fails on day one for a walker or a chair.

It lets you stage the spending. Plumbing, electrics and clear knee space are hard to retrofit; fittings and lighting mostly are not.
