Water gets from a valve under your sink to a tray in your freezer through a chain of things that all fail more often than the ice maker does.
Diagnose an ice maker by following the water, not by looking at the ice maker. Water travels from a shutoff under the sink or behind the fridge, along a supply line, through a filter, into an electrically operated inlet valve, up to a small fill tube that squirts into the ice tray. A blockage, a frozen line or a failed valve anywhere along that path produces exactly one symptom — no ice — and none of those repairs involve the ice maker itself.

Confirming water is arriving at all
The first test is whether the dispenser produces water. If it does, water is reaching the appliance and the problem is downstream — the valve section feeding the ice maker, the fill tube, or the ice maker module. If no water comes out either, the fault is upstream and you are looking at the shutoff, the line, the filter or the valve. This single test halves the search.
Watch for: A technician diagnosing the ice maker module without ever pressing the water dispenser. It is the fastest and most informative check available and it takes five seconds.
The shutoff and the supply line, back at the sink
Refrigerator supplies are often taken off a cold line under the sink. Where an old self-piercing saddle valve was used, the tiny orifice it makes clogs with mineral scale and the flow slowly falls off — a classic slow-decline cause of shrinking cubes. The line itself gets kinked when the fridge is pushed back, and copper lines crimp permanently.
Watch for: A saddle valve on the supply. They are a known weak point, they restrict and drip as they age, and many jurisdictions no longer permit them. Replacing one with a proper valve is a plumbing job.
Filters and flow
A refrigerator water filter that is overdue restricts flow before it stops it, which starves the ice tray and produces small or hollow cubes rather than none. Aftermarket filters vary in how well they flow, and a filter that is not seated fully home will also restrict. Where a filter has just been changed and ice stopped immediately afterwards, the filter is the suspect until proven otherwise.
Watch for: Trapped air after a filter change. Several litres need running through the dispenser to purge it, and until that is done ice production stays erratic.
The inlet valve and the fill tube — the two most common real faults
The inlet valve is a solenoid that opens for a few seconds each cycle. They fail electrically, or their small screens silt up, and the result is no fill or a weak one. Just past it, the fill tube delivers water into the tray, and if it drips after the valve closes the drip freezes and eventually plugs the tube solid. Thawing it clears the symptom; the reason it froze is what has to be found.
Watch for: A fill tube thawed with a hairdryer and nothing else done. It will refreeze within weeks unless the valve leak or the freezer temperature that caused it is addressed.
The ice maker module itself, last
Only once water is proven to arrive does the module come under suspicion: the mould heater that releases cubes, the ejector motor, the thermostat that decides when the tray is frozen, or the bail arm and optical sensor that stop production when the bin is full. Whole modules are usually supplied as a single replaceable assembly rather than repaired piece by piece.
Watch for: A bin-full sensor being obstructed by a bag of frozen food or a bail arm left in the raised position. It stops production completely and looks exactly like a dead ice maker.
Thawing a fill tube, changing a filter or clearing a restricted line sits at the very bottom of appliance work. Inlet valves are modest parts. A complete ice maker module is the priciest outcome and still well below sealed-system work. Check whether the diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair before you book.

Thawing it is the symptom. Unless the leaking valve or the temperature behind it is addressed, you will be booking the same visit again.

This is a small job. If the call-out stands separately, a cheap fix can end up costing more than it should.
What is the freezer compartment actually running at?
Slow or partial ice production is very often a temperature problem, and a measurement settles it without buying anything.

Most are replaced as a complete assembly rather than component by component, so this is the number that decides the repair.
