Almost every refrigerator fault falls into one of two buckets with completely different economics. Sealed-system failures — compressor, condenser or evaporator coil, a refrigerant leak — mean opening the pressurised circuit, which is regulated work and the point at which replacement usually wins on a freestanding fridge. Everything else — thermostat, door gasket, defrost heater, fan motor, control board, damper — is a bolt-in component swap.

Confirming it is the fridge and not the supply
A technician starts by ruling out the boring causes — the outlet, a tripped GFCI, a control left in a holiday or demo mode, a condenser choked with dust and pet hair, or a unit pushed so tight to the wall it cannot shed heat. None of those are a fault.
Watch for: A quote written before the condenser coil has been looked at. A clogged coil makes a healthy compressor run hot and continuously, and it presents exactly like a failing one.
Splitting the fault: airflow, defrost, or sealed system
The diagnostic that matters is whether the evaporator gets cold at all. If it frosts properly but the cold is not reaching the fresh-food side, you have an airflow or defrost problem. If it never gets cold while the compressor runs, the sealed system is implicated. That is the fork in the road.
Watch for: A technician who jumps straight to "you need a compressor" without pulling the rear freezer panel. That panel comes off in minutes and it is where the answer lives.
Component swaps — the cheap and common outcome
Defrost heaters and thermostats, evaporator and condenser fan motors, door gaskets, air dampers, thermistors and control boards are all fitted from outside the refrigerant circuit. Most no-cooling calls end here, and on a machine of any age this is usually straightforward economics.
Watch for: Control boards quoted as the fix for a symptom that was never traced. Boards are expensive and are the easiest part to blame when a diagnosis has not actually been made.
Sealed-system work, and the honest verdict on it
Compressor replacement, coil replacement and leak repair require recovering refrigerant, brazing the circuit closed, pulling a deep vacuum and recharging by weight. On an ordinary freestanding fridge this is the repair most likely to lose against a replacement, because the labour is high and the rest of the machine is the same age as the part that failed. A built-in or column refrigerator inverts that entirely: it is cabinet-integrated and expensive to replace, so sealed-system work that makes no sense on a freestanding unit is usually clearly worth doing on one of those.
Watch for: A "top-up" of refrigerant with no leak found. A sealed system does not consume refrigerant. If it is low, something is leaking, and recharging without repairing the leak buys you months at most. Equally, treat any tidy percentage rule as marketing — the only input that decides your case is the quoted price of your part on your machine.
Standalone chest and upright freezers
A separate freezer runs the same sealed system and the same fault tree, with two genuine differences. Ambient temperature: a unit in an unheated garage can behave badly in cold weather because the thermostat sees a cold room and stops calling for cooling — the fix is a garage-rated unit, not a repair. And a manual-defrost chest freezer has no defrost heater, timer or thermostat at all, so a whole category of failure does not exist on it.
Watch for: Frost build-up on a manual-defrost freezer being sold to you as a defrost-system fault. There is no defrost system. That frost is normal accumulation, or it is a door seal letting humid air in.
Component swaps like fan motors, defrost parts and door gaskets sit at the low end of appliance work. Sealed-system repairs — compressor, coil, refrigerant leak — cost several times that because of the labour and licensing involved. Ask whether the diagnostic fee is credited if you go ahead.
