A panel upgrade replaces your breaker box with a larger one — more amperage, more breaker spaces, modern arc-fault and ground-fault protection. It is a capacity decision, and the honest way to make it is a load calculation: an electrician adds up your home's real demand and compares it against your service size. Plenty of 100-amp homes pass that test comfortably. The ones that fail are usually adding an EV charger, a heat pump, or an induction range.

Load calculation — the step that decides everything else
An electrician totals your home's demand: general lighting and receptacle load by square footage, then the large fixed appliances — range, dryer, water heater, HVAC, EV charger — with the demand factors code allows. The result is a number in amps that you compare against your service rating. This is arithmetic, not opinion, and it is the only honest basis for the recommendation.
Watch for: A quote with no calculation behind it. "You've only got 100 amps, you'll need 200" is a sales line, not a finding. Ask for the calculation on paper. A contractor who will not produce one is telling you they did not do one.
Distinguishing a panel upgrade from a service upgrade
These are different jobs at very different prices. A panel upgrade swaps the breaker box while the incoming service — the utility conductors, the meter, the service entrance — stays as it is. A service upgrade replaces that incoming infrastructure too, and it involves the utility. If your existing service conductors are already rated for the amperage you want, you may only need the first.
Watch for: A quote that says "200 amp upgrade" without specifying whether the meter, service conductors and mast are included. That ambiguity is where change orders live. Get it itemised.
Panel and breaker selection
Sizing is not just amperage — it is also spaces. A panel that is technically 200 amps but has no room for future circuits solves half the problem. Modern panels also bring arc-fault and ground-fault breaker requirements that older boxes did not have, and those breakers cost meaningfully more than the plain ones they replace.
Watch for: Breakers that are not listed for the panel they are installed in. They often snap in physically and are not approved for it. Also watch for a panel chosen because the crew had it on the van rather than because parts for it will still be available in fifteen years.
Permit and inspection
A panel upgrade is permitted work almost everywhere. The permit is normally pulled by the electrician, and an inspector signs off before the work is considered complete. In many jurisdictions the utility will not reconnect or re-energise until that sign-off exists. Requirements and fees vary by city and county — confirm locally rather than assuming.
Watch for: An offer to do it without a permit. It creates a problem at resale, it can void an insurance claim, and it means nobody independent ever looked at the work.
Grounding and bonding brought up to current standards
Older homes often have grounding arrangements that were acceptable when installed and are not what current code expects. Bringing the grounding electrode system up to standard is routinely part of the job, and it is one of the genuine safety improvements in a panel upgrade — not an upsell.
Watch for: Grounding treated as an optional line item you can decline. It is not the place to economise, and an inspector is likely to fail it anyway.
Changeover day and the outage
Circuits are labelled and disconnected, the old panel comes out, the new one is mounted and each circuit is landed on its breaker. Your power is off while this happens — plan for most of a working day. Straightforward panel-only swaps are usually a single day.
Watch for: No plan for the outage. Ask before the day: how long, what time it starts, and whether anything medical, a home office, or a full freezer needs arranging around it.
Labelling, testing and handover
Every breaker should be labelled with what it actually controls — verified, not copied from the old door card, which is wrong in most houses. Arc-fault and ground-fault devices get tested. You should end up with a legible directory, the permit sign-off, and the load calculation.
Watch for: A handwritten label sheet transcribed from the old panel. If nobody walked the house with a circuit tracer, the directory is fiction, and it is the thing you will need most in an emergency.
A panel-only upgrade, where the utility service stays as it is, commonly runs roughly $2,000 to $4,000. Once the meter, service conductors and mast have to be replaced too, it becomes a service upgrade and the range climbs steeply — often five figures. Local labour rates and permit fees move both numbers.

Will you do a load calculation, and will you give me a copy?
The single most important question here. It is the difference between a recommendation and a pitch, and it costs the electrician half an hour.
Is this a panel upgrade or a service upgrade — and what exactly is included?
Meter, service conductors, mast and weather head either are in the quote or they are not. This is where a $3,000 job becomes a $12,000 one after work starts.
How many spare breaker spaces will I have when you are finished?
Capacity and spaces are separate constraints. A full panel at 200 amps is a problem you will pay to solve twice.
Who pulls the permit, and is the inspection fee in this price?
Both should be the electrician's job. A quote that is cheap because it skips the permit is not cheap.
Does the quote include arc-fault and ground-fault breakers where they are now required?
These cost several times what a standard breaker costs, and leaving them out is an easy way to make a quote look competitive.
How long will my power be off, and on what day?
A straight answer is a sign of a crew that has done this before. A vague one usually means nothing has been booked.
Will every breaker be traced and labelled, or copied from the old directory?
Old panel directories are wrong in most houses. Tracing takes time, which is why it gets skipped.
