A push pier is a steel tube driven vertically into the ground by a hydraulic ram that pushes against a bracket fixed to your foundation — meaning the weight of the building is what the ram reacts against. Sections are added until the pier meets material capable of carrying the load. That reaction requirement is why the method suits heavier structures, and it is also why any lift comes from pressurising the installed piers rather than from jacking the house independently.

Check that the structure can serve as reaction
The hydraulic ram pushes the pier down by pushing up against the building. If the structure above the bracket does not weigh enough, the house starts to move before the pier reaches competent material and the installation cannot develop the resistance it needs.
Watch for: The method being proposed for a porch, a deck, a sunroom or a light single-storey addition. Those are the classic cases where reaction runs out — helical piers exist largely because of this constraint.
Assess the footing that will carry the bracket
The bracket clamps to the foundation and everything passes through that connection. Excavation exposes the footing so its size, condition and reinforcement can be judged before anything is loaded through it.
Watch for: Brackets fitted to spalling, undersized or previously repaired concrete without comment. The pier can be perfect and the connection can still be the weak point, and it is buried again within hours.
Drive the pier, watching resistance build
Sections are pushed in sequence and the hydraulic pressure required to advance them is monitored. Rising pressure that holds indicates the pier is entering material with capacity, which is what the installation is chasing.
Watch for: Refusal on an obstruction being read as reaching bearing. Old debris, a buried foundation or a cobble layer can stop a pier convincingly at a depth that will not hold under sustained load. Ask how the crew distinguishes the two, and what they do when it happens.
Decide, in writing, between stabilisation and lift
Stabilisation transfers the load to the pier at the building's current position and aims to stop further movement. Lift attempts to recover some of what was lost by pressurising the piers to raise the structure. These are different objectives, with different risks and different definitions of success.
Watch for: A contract that says "lift to maximum practical recovery" or similar. That phrase means whatever the crew decides on the day, and it leaves you with no basis to say the outcome fell short.
If lifting, do it across the piers together and slowly
Lift is applied progressively across the pier group rather than driven hard at one location, because a building raised unevenly is being distorted rather than restored. Progress is monitored against the elevation survey as it happens.
Watch for: Fast lift at one corner to produce a visible result. It closes a gap somewhere and opens a new one elsewhere, and the second one appears after the crew has gone.
Expect the building to object to being moved back
Everything above has spent years accommodating the settled position. Raising it can reopen previously closed cracks, disturb rigid supply and drain connections, and change how doors and windows sit. Watch for: Being told lift carries no risk to finishes. It always carries some. What varies is how much, and whether anyone told you beforehand.
Lock off, backfill and reinstate
Once the target is met, the connection is secured so the load stays on the piers, excavations are backfilled and compacted, and disturbed surfaces are made good.
Watch for: Backfill dumped loose into deep excavations. It settles into a trench along the wall that channels surface water toward the foundation — undoing the drainage that keeps the repair from being tested again.
Close out with measurements and a location record
A repeat elevation survey documents what was actually achieved against the agreed target, and a layout drawing records where each pier sits. Both belong in your file with the contract.
Watch for: A verbal "we got most of it back". Without a closing survey, the difference between the target and the result is a matter of opinion, and opinion is not something a warranty responds to.
Driven pier work is generally priced per pier plus mobilisation, so the specified count and the depth reached dominate the total. Attempting lift rather than stabilising adds monitoring time on site, and repairing finishes disturbed by that lift is usually a separate cost.

The most consequential sentence in the agreement. A named target with a tolerance is checkable; "maximum practical" is not.
How will you tell competent bearing from an obstruction?
A pier stopped on buried debris looks successful during installation and fails later. The answer should describe pressure behaviour over time, not just a number reached.
Who repairs finishes disturbed by lifting, and is that in this price?
Lift moves plaster, tile, trim and sometimes pipework. Establish ownership of that work before it exists, not while standing in the room looking at it.
Will you check plumbing connections after lifting?
Rigid drain and supply lines crossing the foundation are the things least able to accommodate movement, and a slow leak created by lift can go unnoticed for months.
What is your procedure if a pier does not achieve the required resistance?
Tells you whether additional depth is inside the price, and whether the crew has a defined response or improvises.
How long has this company operated under this name, and who honours the warranty if it changes?
A lifetime transferable warranty is only as durable as the entity behind it. Ask about ownership changes, whether obligations pass on a sale of the business, and what documentation you would need to produce years from now.
