Kitchen warranties

Warranty terms differ by manufacturer and by product line, and they change. We will not tell you what any specific brand offers — read the actual warranty document for the exact line you are buying, not the summary on the showroom placard. Pay attention to three things: what triggers coverage, who pays for labor to remove and reinstall, and whether the warranty transfers if you sell the house.

Workmanship warranties are the contractor's own promise and are worth exactly what the contractor is worth. A written workmanship warranty from a firm with a real address and an active license is meaningful. The same words from a crew you found in a parking lot are not. Ask how long the firm has operated under its current license, because a warranty only survives as long as the business does.

For cabinets, one verifiable quality signal exists independent of any warranty claim: KCMA/ANSI A161.1 certification. That program tests shelves loaded for seven days, wall cabinets loaded to 600 pounds, 25,000 door and drawer cycles, and finish resistance to heat, cold, and common spills. Asking whether a line carries the seal is a concrete question with a checkable answer.

The most common way homeowners lose coverage is water. Standing water at a sink base, an un-caulked seam behind a faucet, or a slow dishwasher leak will typically be excluded as owner neglect on both product and workmanship warranties. Check under your sink twice a year; that habit protects more warranty value than anything you negotiate at signing.

How to choose

Get the workmanship warranty in the contract, in years

Not 'we stand behind our work.' A number, a start date, and what it covers. Verbal warranties are unenforceable in practice.

Read the actual product warranty document

Showroom summaries are marketing. Ask for the PDF for the specific line and model. Check who pays labor on a replacement — that is usually the expensive part.

Ask whether coverage transfers on sale

Some product warranties end when the original purchaser sells. If you plan to move, that changes what the warranty is worth to you.

Ask if the cabinet line is KCMA/ANSI A161.1 certified

A published test standard beats an adjective. It is a yes-or-no question the manufacturer can answer.

Register products and keep the paperwork

Many manufacturers require registration or proof of purchase. Scan receipts, model numbers, and the installer's invoice into one folder on day one.
