What is cockroach control?

Cockroach control splits into two services that share a name. A German cockroach infestation is a breeding population living inside your kitchen or bathroom, and it needs a bait-led protocol run over several visits alongside sanitation and clutter reduction. Larger roaches wandering in from a drain, a crawl space or the sewer are an exclusion and moisture problem, solved by finding and closing the route. Getting the identification wrong means buying the wrong service.

Signs you need cockroach control

• You see one in the kitchen when you turn the light on at night - roaches are nocturnal, so a daytime sighting suggests a heavy population
• Small dark specks like ground pepper in drawers, cabinet corners, or along the underside of shelves
• A musty, oily odour in a cupboard or behind an appliance that gets stronger as numbers rise
• Egg cases - small brown capsules - glued into hinges, drawer runners, or the seam under a counter
• Shed skins accumulating behind the fridge, under the dishwasher, or in the motor housing of an appliance
• Activity concentrated around warmth and moisture: dishwasher, fridge motor, under the sink, near the water heater
• Large roaches appearing in basements, garages or bathrooms after rain, which points to a drain or crawl space route
• Neighbours in an adjoining unit reporting the same thing

How cockroach control actually works

1. 1

   Identification, and it decides the whole protocol

   German cockroaches are small, live and breed indoors year-round, and concentrate in kitchens and bathrooms. American and oriental cockroaches are much larger, live primarily outdoors or in sewers and drains, and come in as invaders. One is an infestation; the other is a doorway problem.

2. 2

   Locating the harbourage

   For German cockroaches the technician inspects the places they actually live: appliance motor housings, the void under and behind cabinets, hinge recesses, cracks at the counter join, the dishwasher surround, and inside electrical and switch plates. Monitors may be placed to map where the population is heaviest.

   Watch forA treatment applied to open surfaces and skirting boards. Roaches are not on the open floor during the day - treating where you can see is treating where they are not.

3. 3

   Bait-led treatment into cracks and voids

   Gel bait is placed in small amounts directly into harbourage - crevices, hinge points, void edges - where roaches feed and then transfer material through the population. Placement precision matters more than quantity.

   Watch forBait placed on open, clean or greasy surfaces. Roaches avoid the open, and grease and cleaning products contaminate bait so it stops being taken.

4. 4

   Growth regulators and monitoring

   Alongside bait, technicians commonly use insect growth regulators to interrupt the population's ability to replace itself, and sticky monitors to measure whether numbers are actually falling between visits.

   Watch forNo monitors and no measurement. Without them, "it seems better" is the only evidence anyone has, and roach populations recover quietly.

5. 5

   Follow-up visits, on a schedule that matches the biology

   Egg cases are protected and hatch after the initial treatment, so a single visit cannot end an infestation. Serious German cockroach work is a series of visits weeks apart until monitors are clear.

   Watch forA one-visit quote for a heavy infestation, or a standard quarterly plan proposed as the fix. The quarterly rhythm is far too slow for this insect.

6. 6

   Your half: sanitation, clutter and moisture

   Roaches need food, water and harbourage. Cardboard and paper clutter is prime harbourage, and a dripping trap or a leaking supply line keeps a population alive through good treatment.

   Watch forA company that does not tell you what to do. Cockroach treatment where the occupant changes nothing is the most common reason a competent protocol fails.

7. 7

   Exclusion, for the invader species

   Where large roaches are entering rather than breeding, the fix is structural: sealing around pipe penetrations, replacing failed door sweeps, screening crawl space vents, and dealing with floor drains and dry traps that give a direct route up from the sewer.

What does cockroach control cost?
