In an existing pool, most of the job is determined by what is already buried: the niche, the conduit and the cable route. Changing the fixture is often straightforward; adding a light where there is no niche means opening the pool shell and usually the deck.

How pool lighting installation actually works

  1. Establish what is already in the wall

    The niche size and type, the conduit run, the cable and where it terminates dictate what fixtures will physically and electrically fit. This is an inspection, not a catalogue exercise.

    Watch for: A fixture ordered from a website before anyone has looked at the niche. Niches are not universal, and a fixture that does not seat properly in one is not an installation you want in your pool.

  2. Choose the fixture and the supply arrangement

    Modern pool lighting is predominantly LED, in either line-voltage or low-voltage arrangements, with white or colour-changing options and, on some, control integration.

    Watch for: Assuming any LED drops into any niche on any existing wiring. Voltage, transformer requirements and control signalling all have to match what is buried, or the buried part has to change.

  3. Cable, conduit and the junction above the water

    The fixture cable runs through conduit from the niche up to a junction point positioned above the water line and clear of the deck, where the connection to the supply is made.

    Watch for: Connections made below the required height, or in an enclosure that is not rated for the location. This is exactly the kind of shortcut that looks fine and is the reason the rules exist.

  4. Bonding — the part that makes the pool safe

    The niche, the fixture and the metal in and around the pool are connected into the pool's equipotential bonding system so that no dangerous voltage difference can exist across the water and the deck.

    Watch for: Bonding described as optional, legacy or someone else's job. Electric shock in a pool is a fatal-risk hazard, this is the system that prevents it, and the requirements are set in electrical code and enforced by inspection. Insist on a licensed electrician.

  5. Protection, testing and inspection

    The circuit is protected as required for the location, the installation is tested, and in most jurisdictions it is inspected before the pool goes back into use.

    Watch for: No inspection where one is required. It is both a safety issue and something that surfaces awkwardly at sale.

  6. Aiming, sealing and refill

    The fixture is seated, sealed as the manufacturer requires, the cable coiled in the niche so it can be pulled out for future service, and the pool refilled.

    Watch for: A fixture installed with no service loop of cable in the niche. Without it, the next replacement means draining the pool rather than lifting the fixture out onto the deck.

What does pool lighting installation cost?

Replacing a fixture in an existing niche is a modest job dominated by labour and the electrical connection. Adding a light where no niche exists is a different order of cost entirely, because it means cutting the shell and usually the deck, and is only sensible during a remodel.

Pool lighting is one of the few genuinely lethal DIY temptations in home maintenance. A luminaire is submerged in water that people are standing in, and the bonding and protection arrangements around it are what stop a fault becoming an electrocution. This is licensed, inspected electrical work everywhere in the US. "It is just a bulb" is how people get hurt.

  • Identifying the problem: noting whether the fixture is dark, flickering, fogged or has water inside it
  • Switching the circuit off and leaving the pool out of use until it is looked at
  • Researching fixture options and colour or control features before speaking to an electrician
  • Operating scenes and schedules once the system is installed and commissioned

You should not, and this is one of the few places where the standard internet answer is actively dangerous. A pool luminaire sits in water that people are standing in, and its safety depends on bonding, on correctly rated enclosures, on the junction being at the required height, and on the circuit protection being right. Those are licensed, inspected matters. Even a straightforward-looking fixture swap involves the connection and the niche seal. Call an electrician who works on pools.
Adding a fixture where a niche and conduit already exist is usually straightforward. Adding one where neither exists is a much bigger job: the shell has to be cut for a niche, conduit run to a compliant junction point, and that route very often passes under finished decking. It is entirely doable, and it is the sort of work that costs a fraction as much if bundled into a resurfacing or a remodel when the pool is already empty and the deck is already open.
Generally yes, on two counts. They use substantially less power than the incandescent fixtures they replace, which matters because pool lights run at exactly the hours when nobody wants a big load, and they last longer, which matters a great deal when replacing one is an electrician's visit rather than a bulb change. Colour and scene capability is the bonus rather than the reason. Where an old fixture is failing anyway, the upgrade case is easy.
Bonding connects the metal parts in and around a pool — reinforcement steel, light niches, ladders, handrails, equipment, and sometimes the deck reinforcement — so that they are all at the same electrical potential. That is what prevents a voltage difference existing across the water and the surfaces people touch, which is the mechanism behind pool electrocution.
