Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523A new filter tank is not a like-for-like box swap. Media type, square footage and plumbing determine whether water clears — or whether you only bought a shiny tank that channels and short-cycles.
Pool filter installation is the replacement or first-time fitting of the filter vessel and its media — sand, cartridge elements or diatomaceous earth (DE) grids — plumbed into the pump’s discharge path so debris is captured before water returns to the pool. On a retrofit, the filter must be sized to the pump’s flow and the pool’s volume, not picked by tank colour. A mismatched filter either restricts the pump or lets water race through without cleaning.

Diagnose whether the filter is actually the failure
Cloudy water can be chemistry, a failing pump, bypassing valves, or a filter that is simply dirty. A technician should read pressure clean vs dirty, inspect the multiport, and confirm water is not bypassing media before selling a tank.
Watch for: A new filter quoted without a pressure reading or an inspection of the existing media. That is a parts sale, not a diagnosis.
Choose media type for how you actually maintain the pool
Sand is common and backwashed; cartridges are rinsed and eventually replaced; DE filters polish water finely and need careful recharge after cleaning. Lifestyle and service habits matter more than brochure clarity claims.
Watch for: Being upgraded to DE without a conversation about maintenance mess and grid integrity. The clearest water is useless if you will not maintain the system.
Size the filter to flow and pool volume
Filter area and rated flow must fit the pump curve and the turnover you need. Oversizing can be sensible for longer filter cycles; undersizing is how pressure spikes and water quality fails.
Watch for: Matching only by “same size tank as before” after a pump upgrade. The old tank may have been wrong for years.
Plumbing, valves and unions
The install should include sound unions, correct valve orientation, and pipe support so the new tank is not stressed. Changing footprints often means cutting and re-gluing lines — that work is part of the job, not an afterthought.
Watch for: Hard-piped tanks with no unions. Future service becomes destructive.
Startup, media charge and homeowner handoff
Sand needs the right depth and grade; DE needs a proper grid set and charge; cartridges need correct element count and orientation. You should leave with clean/dirty pressure notes and a maintenance routine for that media.
Watch for: A tank left with whatever sand was on the truck and no recorded clean pressure. You have no baseline when it clogs.
Match filter capacity to pump and pool volume
An undersized filter on a strong pump channels or short-cycles; an oversized filter on a weak pump may never reach useful flow. Installation day should confirm the pairing, not only that unions fit.
Watch for: A bigger tank sold as automatically better without checking the pump curve and turnover target.
Pool filter installation is usually a mid-range equipment job: the vessel and media plus labour to re-plumb and commission. Changing media type, moving the tank, or correcting undersized pipe raises the number. Whole-pad redesigns are a different project.

Everyone else ranking for this is paid when you say yes. Here's when you shouldn't.
What are clean and dirty pressure readings on the current filter?
Without a baseline, nobody can tell whether the tank, media or something upstream is failing.
What filter area and media type are you specifying, and why for this pump?
You want a reason tied to flow and maintenance, not a brand preference alone.
Will unions and valves be renewed so the tank is serviceable?
Saving a little on fittings makes the next repair miserable.
Is any pipe resizing included if the pump was upgraded?
Filter work is the moment to fix obvious hydraulic bottlenecks — or to document that they remain.
What maintenance routine should I follow for this media?
Sand, cartridge and DE fail differently. The handoff is part of the install.
Will you size the filter to my pump and pool volume in writing?
Guesswork pairing is how new filters disappoint on day one.
Does the quote include media, valves, unions, and a leak check under pressure?
A dry tank on the pad is not a finished install.
