What is gutter brightening?

Gutter brightening removes the vertical dark striping — often called tiger striping — from the painted outer face of aluminium gutters. It is a distinct service because that striping is a bonded film rather than loose dirt: it survives a house wash, a hose and ordinary detergent. Removing it means a dedicated brightening product applied to the face and physically agitated by hand, section by section, and then rinsed. It is not gutter cleaning, which is clearing the inside of the trough.

How gutter brightening actually works

Confirm the trough is clear first

Brightening treats the outside face. If the inside is full, the runoff that created the striping is still overflowing over the front edge, and the stripes start rebuilding immediately. Sequence is clearing first, brightening second — often on the same visit but in that order.

Watch for: A brightening quote with no interest in the state of the trough. It is the equivalent of painting a wall that is still wet.
Test a length before committing to the run

A short section is treated and assessed once dry, which establishes both how much of the stripe will actually clear and whether the product affects the gutter's painted finish. Gutters vary enormously in age and coating condition even on one house.

Watch for: A guarantee of a uniform result before anyone has tried a section. Nobody can know how far a particular set of gutters will come back until a length has been done.
Apply, agitate and work in sections

The product goes onto the face, is given its contact time and is worked with a brush along each section. The agitation is the part that does the work — this is genuinely hand labour along the whole run, from a ladder or a pole, which is why it is priced separately from anything sprayed.

Watch for: Anyone proposing to do this by spraying alone from the ground. Without contact and agitation the film stays where it is, and you will have paid for a rinse.
Rinse the face, the wall and everything below it

Residue is rinsed off the gutter, off the siding beneath and off the planting in the drip line. Brightening products are applied at the highest point on the elevation, so everything below is downstream of them.

Watch for: Streaks left running down the wall under the gutter. The wall was clean before the brightening started; if it is marked afterwards, the rinse was inadequate and it needs sorting before the crew leaves.
Look at it dry, from the ground, from both angles

Wet gutters look brilliant regardless of what happened. Judge the result dry and from the position you normally see the house from, along the run as well as square on — striping shows up most in raking light along the length.

Watch for: Sign-off while everything is still wet. This is the service where that difference is starkest, and it is the reason this job generates disputes.

When gutter brightening is the wrong call

Everyone else ranking for this is paid when you say yes. Here's when you shouldn't.

The gutters are failing. Sagging runs, split seams, rusted-through steel sections or hangers pulling out of the fascia are a replacement or repair conversation. Brightening a gutter that is about to be taken down is money spent on a skip.
The painted finish has already broken down. Where the factory coating is chalking heavily or has oxidised through, brightening lifts the film and reveals a dull, uneven surface underneath. The realistic options at that point are repainting or replacing, not cleaning.
You expect them to match new gutters. Brightening removes a stain from an aged surface. It restores a lot on gutters in reasonable condition and comparatively little on twenty-year-old ones, and no honest crew will promise which yours are before testing a section.
You have not dealt with why they stripe. Overflow from a blocked trough, missing or damaged drip edge, and runoff coming over the front lip all reproduce the pattern. Brightening on that cycle becomes an annual purchase rather than a fix.
Nobody can safely reach them. This is ladder work along an entire roofline, often at second-storey height, over planting and hard landscaping. If access is genuinely awkward, that has to be priced and planned rather than improvised.
You are about to have the roof done. Roof work drops debris and grit into and over the gutters. Have the roof finished, the trough cleared, and brighten after.

Is this included in the house wash, or is it a separate item?

It is separate, essentially always. Asking makes the crew say so out loud and puts it on the quote, which is the whole dispute avoided in one question.
Will you do a test section and let me see it dry before you do the rest?

The only way anyone learns how far your particular gutters will come back. It also protects you if the product turns out to affect the finish.
Is the product brushed on and agitated, or sprayed and rinsed?

Agitation is the mechanism. If nothing touches the gutter face, the film stays on the gutter face.
Is clearing the trough included, and in which order will you do the two?

Clear first, brighten second. A crew that has not thought about the order has not thought about why the stripes are there.
What is your realistic expectation for gutters of this age?

You want a range and a caveat, not a promise. Anyone offering a uniform, like-new result on old gutters is telling you what you want to hear.
How are you protecting the siding, windows and planting directly below?

Everything on the elevation is downstream of a product applied at the top of it, and this is the one job where runoff onto clean surfaces is unavoidable rather than accidental.
How are you reaching them, and are you insured for work at that height?

The whole job happens at roofline. Ask for the certificate, and be sceptical of anyone planning to do a two-storey run from a stepladder.

Why do my gutters have black stripes when the rest of the house is clean?

Because the front face of a gutter is exposed to something no other part of the house gets: a thin, constant trickle of water running over the outer lip, carrying whatever is on the roof with it, drying in place, and doing it again at every rainfall. Over years that builds a bonded film on the painted surface. It is concentrated into vertical stripes because the water comes over the lip at consistent points, usually near seams and hangers, which is why the pattern is regular rather than random.

Why did my house wash not clean the gutters?

Because the two problems are not the same kind of problem. A house wash uses a dilute solution to kill and lift biological growth from walls, and that is genuinely what is on the siding. The gutter face has a bonded oxidation and road-film layer that the same solution has no meaningful effect on. This catches out enormous numbers of homeowners each year, and it is why the item exists separately on any competent quote rather than being folded into a whole-house price.

Is gutter brightening the same as gutter cleaning?

No, and the two are routinely confused when booking. Gutter cleaning means clearing leaves and silt out of the inside of the trough so that water drains — a maintenance job with a functional purpose. Brightening means removing staining from the painted outside face — a cosmetic job. They are often bought together and it makes sense to, but they are different work with different prices, and asking for one will not get you the other.

Will the stripes come back?

Yes, eventually, because the mechanism that creates them has not gone anywhere — water will keep running over the front lip. How quickly depends on your roof, your tree cover and how well the gutters drain. What genuinely extends the interval is keeping the trough clear so water leaves through the downspouts rather than over the front edge, since overflow is what accelerates the pattern. Treat it as a periodic appearance item, not a permanent fix.

Can I brighten gutters myself?

The chemistry is available and the technique is not difficult. The problem is that the job is a ladder move every few feet along an entire roofline, with a brush in one hand, over planting, at height — which is the exact activity profile behind most serious ladder injuries around a house. On a single-storey run within comfortable reach it is a reasonable thing to attempt. On a two-storey elevation it is not, and the value of hiring it out is the access rather than the product.

Would painting the gutters be better than brightening them?

It becomes the better answer once the factory finish has degraded far enough that brightening reveals a dull or blotchy surface rather than a clean one. Painting is a bigger job with its own preparation demands and its own maintenance cycle, and on gutters near the end of their life replacement often costs little more. The useful sequence is to brighten a test section first: what that section looks like dry tells you which of the three conversations you are actually in.
