Panel survey — space, bus type, main lugs

De-energise plan and CT placement
Mains CTs go on the correct hot legs with orientation arrows matching the product's import/export logic. Branch CTs, if used, are labelled. Neutral and ground are not interchangeable toys — placement mistakes invent nonsense data that looks precise.
Watch for: Live-panel heroics without need. Many installs are safer with a planned outage window.
Hub power and network path
The monitor needs power and a path to the internet — Wi-Fi, Ethernet or a bridge. Panels in metal rooms and garages are Wi-Fi dead zones; an Ethernet drop or better AP placement is sometimes the real install.
Watch for: A perfect CT install reporting zero because the hub never joined the network. Commission end-to-end before the ladder leaves.
App configuration and sanity checks
Utility rate schedules, solar flags and circuit names get set so charts mean something. Draw a known load (kettle, space heater) and confirm the graph moves the right direction and magnitude.
Watch for: Inverted solar CTs that show export as import forever. Five minutes of testing saves months of confusion.
Close-up and documentation
Panel cover returns with no pinched CT leads, breakers labelled if anything moved, and a note of which circuits are monitored. Keep the product account under the homeowner email.
Watch for: Leads blocking the cover or resting on bus bars. Mechanical finish is part of electrical safety.
Align monitoring with rate schedules and goals
If you are on time-of-use rates, configure the app so peaks mean something. If you are hunting a mystery bill spike, note the date range and which appliances changed. Data without a question becomes wallpaper.
Watch for: Pretty dashboards nobody opens after week two. Define one decision the data should support before install day.
Kits are consumer-priced; professional install is usually a short service call when the panel is cooperative, longer with circuit-level CTs, solar orientation, or network remediation.
