What is smart panel installation?

A smart panel replaces your load centre with one that meters and switches individual circuits under software control. The lighter alternative retrofits smart breakers into the panel you already own, monitoring or controlling only the circuits you choose. Both are real products with real uses — solar, battery storage, EV charging, load management on a constrained service. For most homes neither is a good purchase, because what they buy is visibility and control, not safety, and not capacity.

How smart panel installation actually works

  1. Establish why you want it — the answer decides everything

    There are three honest reasons: managing load on a service that cannot be upgraded easily, integrating solar and battery storage with controlled backup circuits, or wanting circuit-level energy data. If your reason is not on that list, the rest of this decision probably does not need making.

    Watch for: Buying it because the existing panel is old or full. That is a panel replacement, which your electrician can do with an ordinary load centre for considerably less.

  2. Full smart panel versus retrofit smart breakers

    A full smart panel is a like-for-like replacement of the load centre, so every circuit is metered and switchable, and it is the option that integrates most cleanly with storage and backup. Retrofit breakers go into a compatible existing panel and give you monitoring, and sometimes switching, only on the circuits you fit them to — far cheaper, far less disruptive, and reversible.

    Watch for: Compatibility. Retrofit smart breakers are specific to particular panel makes and models. Check yours against the manufacturer's list before assuming this route exists for you.

  3. Have an electrician assess the service and the existing panel

    Service size, the condition of the existing equipment, available space and whether anything needs bringing up to current requirements are all electrical questions with electrical answers.     Watch for: Assuming a smart panel raises your service capacity. It does not. If the incoming service is undersized, that is a utility and service-entrance job, and the smart panel changes nothing about it.

  4. Consider load management as the actual product

    The most defensible use of this hardware is shedding or staging loads so that a constrained service can host something it otherwise could not — commonly an EV charger. Where that avoids a service upgrade, the maths can genuinely work. Ask for that comparison explicitly.

    Watch for: A quote that never compares the smart panel against the cost of simply upgrading the service. Sometimes the boring option wins, and the only way to find out is to price both.

  5. Plan for the software outliving nothing

    This is the one piece of your electrical system whose usefulness depends on a vendor's app and servers continuing to exist. The breakers keep protecting circuits regardless, but the reason you bought it may not survive a discontinued product line.

    Watch for: No answer to "what happens to the smart features if the company stops supporting this". Ask it, and note the answer.

No, and this is the most important misunderstanding in the category. Your capacity is set by the incoming service and the service equipment, not by the load centre it feeds. What a smart panel can do is manage demand within your existing capacity — shedding or staging loads so that, for example, an EV charger only draws when other large loads are idle. That is a real and useful thing, but it is load management, not more power.
For a specific minority, yes: homes with solar and battery storage where controlled backup circuits matter, homes adding a large load to a service that cannot easily be upgraded, and owners who genuinely want circuit-level data. For everyone else it is an expensive way to acquire a dashboard, and a clamp-based energy monitor in your existing panel provides the visibility for a fraction of the price. Nobody selling one will frame it that way.
A licensed electrician, without exception. This is service-side work on the load centre — permitted and inspected in most jurisdictions, and carried out with the supply disconnected by arrangement. Smart home installers may specify and commission the software side, but the physical installation is electrical work and belongs to the trade that holds the licence. The breakers carry on protecting the circuits, because that function is mechanical and electrical rather than software. What you lose is the reason you paid the premium: the app, the monitoring, the scheduling and any integration with storage or charging. It is a fair question to put to anyone quoting, and the quality of the answer tells you something about how long they expect the product line to last.
