    A designer walks the property and produces a schedule of what is controlled where: which loads, which zones, which keypad positions, which sensors. This is a drawing exercise before it is a hardware one, and it should be legible to you.

It is unreliable as the only way to do something, it depends on a cloud service for most assistants, and it is worth being deliberate about which microphones are in which rooms.

  7. Programming, scenes and household testing

    Scenes are written, schedules set, and the system is tested by the people who live there rather than by the installer. The useful test is whether someone who was not involved can walk in and operate the house.

  8. Documentation, credentials and service arrangements

    You should finish with a device schedule, a cable schedule, the programming file or a copy of the configuration, and administrator credentials in your name. What ongoing support costs, and what happens if you use somebody else, should be written down.

When saying yes is the wrong move:
  • You have a normal-sized house and a normal number of devices. This is the majority case and no dealer will say it. Off-the-shelf hardware, one hub and a weekend gets you most of the outcome for a fraction of the price.
  • Your network has not been sorted out. A designed system on an unreliable network produces expensive intermittent faults that are nobody's fault and everybody's problem. Infrastructure first, always.
  • Only one person in the household wants it. These systems change how everyone operates the house. If the others have not been consulted at design stage, the complaints start at handover and never stop.
  • You are not prepared to keep a relationship with an integrator. Designed systems need occasional programming changes. If the idea of calling someone to move a scene irritates you, choose a platform you can administer yourself.
  • You are selling in the near future. Buyers rarely pay for someone else's automation, and a system tied to a dealer account can complicate a sale rather than help it.
  • What you actually want is voice control. That is a purchase from a retailer and an evening of setup. It does not require a system, a designer or an installer, and a quote that starts there is answering a different question.

What to check when hiring for home automation system install

  • Is this platform one that other companies can service? The most consequential question you will ask. Some platforms can only be programmed by an authorised dealer, which makes your choice of company permanent.
  • Which functions keep working with no internet connection? Get the list in writing. Locks, heating and garage access on cloud-only paths are the ones that will bite you.
  • Can I have a copy of the programming or configuration file? It is your house. A copy in your possession is the difference between hiring a different integrator and replacing the system.
  • Can somebody who has never seen this house operate it from the wall? The real usability test. If the honest answer needs a phone and an account, the design has a problem.
  • What is included in support after handover, and for how long? Programming changes are normal in the first months. Whether they are billable should be agreed before, not discovered after.
  • Where is the equipment going, and is it ventilated? Heat kills this gear. The cupboard is chosen once and it is very awkward to change afterwards.
  • What existing devices are you replacing rather than integrating, and why? Sometimes replacement is right. Sometimes it is a margin decision. A good integrator will explain which this is, item by item.

In a typical house with a dozen or two devices, consumer hardware plus a single hub reaches a very similar outcome for a very different price.
In practice, whether anything is designed. A smart home is usually an accumulation - devices bought individually, each with its own app, each solving one problem. Home automation implies a control layer with logic in it: the house responds to conditions and events without anybody opening an app. You can build the second out of consumer parts; the distinction is design and commissioning, not price.
Each existing device falls into one of three buckets. Some are supported natively by whichever control layer you choose and simply come across. Some can be bridged, which works but adds a hop and a failure point. Some are better replaced than integrated, usually because their only interface is a vendor cloud that cannot be automated reliably. A good integrator will sort your inventory into those three groups, in writing, before proposing anything.
It can be, but it should be the last layer rather than the foundation. Voice is genuinely useful for hands-full situations and for accessibility, and it is easy to add to almost any platform. It is a poor primary interface: recognition fails, most assistants depend on a cloud service, and a command spoken by a guest who does not know the exact phrase does nothing. Anything important should also be doable from a wall control.
It depends entirely on the platform, which is why the question belongs in the first meeting rather than the last. Open or widely-supported platforms can be picked up by any competent company. Some dealer-programmed platforms can only be modified by an authorised dealer holding the software, and if you also have no copy of the configuration file, the practical options narrow to finding another dealer willing to take it on - or starting again.
Yes, and most are. The constraint is not the technology, it is cable. Anything wireless retrofits easily; anything that wants a wire - keypad positions, hardwired access points, controlled loads that are not currently switched separately - costs whatever access costs in your particular walls. That is why the same system in a house being renovated is a materially different price from the same system in a finished, occupied one.
