Home theater wiring - do it before the drywall
Speaker, video and power runs put in while the studs are open cost a fraction of the same runs fished into a finished, insulated wall. Nobody selling you the equipment will tell you that, because they are selling to people whose walls are already closed.
What is home theater wiring?
Home theater wiring is the in-wall infrastructure behind a system: speaker cable to each position, video and control runs from the equipment to the display or projector, and power provision at both ends. The decisive variable is timing. Running it during construction or a gut remodel is straightforward and cheap; fishing the same runs into a finished, insulated wall is a materially different job, and it is why this should be planned early.
Signs you need home theater wiring
- You are building, extending or taking a room back to studs, and the walls will be open for a window that does not come back
- You have a soundbar and a subwoofer and have decided you want speakers at the sides and behind you, which means cable across the room
- A projector is going on the ceiling and there is currently no cable and no power anywhere near it
- Your display is going on the wall and you would rather not see a cable trunking box running down to the equipment shelf
- Existing speaker cable was run under the carpet, along the skirting, or through a wall without any thought about its rating
- The equipment is moving to a cupboard or another room and the video, control and infrared paths all need to follow it
- You want in-ceiling speakers for height channels, which is a construction decision as much as an audio one

How home theater wiring actually works
Fix the seating position before anything else
Every speaker location, the screen height, the projector throw and the cable lengths all derive from where people sit. That position is set by the room and the furniture, and it is the one input that cannot be changed later without invalidating the rest.
Watch forA pre-wire drawn from a layout that has not been confirmed with whoever is furnishing the room. Cable stubs that end up behind a sofa two feet from where they should be are useless and they are already inside the wall.
Deciding the layout and how many positions to provide for
Speaker positions are chosen for the seating and the room, including whether height or overhead channels are wanted - those are in-ceiling and they are effectively impossible to add sensibly afterwards. Provision is normally made for more positions than the current system uses, because the cable is the cheap part.

Choosing in-wall rated cable - a code matter, not an upgrade
Cable installed inside a wall or ceiling cavity has to carry the appropriate in-wall rating for its jacket, and cable in a plenum space has a stricter requirement again. This is a fire-safety provision about how the jacket behaves in a fire, and it is not the same as the cable a retailer sells for connecting a speaker across a floor.

Planning the video and control runs
Long video runs are not simply longer cables - beyond a certain distance they need a different approach, whether an active cable, a fibre-based one, or an extender over network cable. The route also carries control: infrared, network for the equipment, and a return path for audio from the display.
Watch forA single video cable pushed into a closed wall with no conduit. If it fails, or a future format needs more than it can carry, the only remedy is opening the wall. A conduit or even a pull string alongside it removes that risk entirely.
Providing power at both ends
A wall-mounted display needs power behind it, and a ceiling projector needs power at the ceiling. Both are electrical work, and both are far cheaper while the wall is open. A recessed outlet behind a display also lets it sit flatter, which is usually the reason the wall mount was chosen.

Terminating and dressing at the plates
Runs land on brush plates or terminated wall plates at each position, with a service loop left inside the cavity so a plate can be pulled forward and worked on. Both ends are labelled, because a bundle of unmarked speaker cable at the equipment end is a genuinely tedious problem later.

Retrofitting into a finished room, when pre-wire is not possible
Where the walls are closed, the honest options are fishing through the cavity where the construction allows, running in trunking or a moulding channel, going under a floor or through a loft, or accepting wireless for the rear channels. Each has a real trade-off and a competent installer will present all of them rather than only the one they prefer.

Testing and commissioning before making good
Every run is checked for continuity and polarity before anything is closed, and video and extender links are proved with the actual equipment where possible. Speaker polarity reversed on one channel is easy to do and produces a system that sounds subtly wrong in a way that is very hard to diagnose afterwards.

When home theater wiring is the wrong call
When saying yes is the wrong move:
- The room is finished and you are happy with a soundbar. A good soundbar and subwoofer need no cable in any wall. Opening finished walls to reach a modest improvement is rarely proportionate.
- The room layout is not settled. Everything derives from the seating position. Wiring a room before the furniture plan is fixed puts cable stubs in the wrong places permanently.
- You are renting. In-wall runs, ceiling speakers and recessed outlets stay behind, and most of them need written consent. Freestanding speakers and wireless rear channels do not.
- You want overhead channels but cannot open the ceiling. In-ceiling speakers retrofitted through a finished ceiling with a room above are an access job with a repair attached. Consider upward-firing speakers on the floor instead before committing.
- Nobody has looked at what is above and below the room. Joist direction, fire blocking and the floor construction decide whether a retrofit is an afternoon or a week. That is a site visit, not a phone estimate.
- You are moving within a year or two. None of this comes with you, and buyers do not generally pay for someone else's speaker positions.

- Surface-mounted trunking or moulding channel in a finished room, which needs no cavity work at all
- Choosing wireless rear speakers to avoid a difficult run entirely

- Any power provision - a recessed outlet behind a display, or a supply at a ceiling projector
- Fishing runs through finished, insulated walls and ceilings, especially with a room above
- In-ceiling speakers in a finished ceiling, where cutting, bracing and making good all meet
- Runs crossing a fire separation between floors or into an attached garage
- Long video runs needing extenders, fibre or conduit, where getting it wrong means opening the wall
- Anything in a plenum space, which has stricter cable requirements than a normal cavity
What to check when hiring for home theater wiring
- Is every run you are putting in the wall rated for in-wall use? It is a code requirement about how the jacket behaves in a fire, not a quality upgrade, and it is the most common violation in this trade.
- Are you leaving a conduit or a pull string on the video run? It is the difference between swapping a failed or outdated cable in ten minutes and opening a finished wall.
- What extra positions are you providing for beyond the current system? Spare runs during a pre-wire cost almost nothing. Adding them later costs the entire access job again.
- Who is doing the power behind the display and at the projector? That part is licensed electrical work. Knowing whether it is included, subcontracted or excluded avoids the standard argument.
- How much service loop are you leaving at each plate? Cable cut tight to the plate cannot be re-terminated, which turns a simple repair into a wall repair.
- Have you looked above and below this room? Joist direction, fire blocking and floor construction decide the price of a retrofit and none of them are visible from the doorway.
