A smart switch needs a small amount of power all the time to stay awake and listen, and most draw it through a neutral conductor in the switch box. In a lot of older wiring the neutral never goes near the switch - only the live and the wire out to the fixture do. Establishing whether your box has one is the first step, and in some houses the last.

How smart switch installation actually works

  1. Identify the wiring in the box - before anything is bought

    Power off, plate off, and look. Power arriving at the switch with a neutral bundle present is the easy case; a switch loop, where the only cable in the box runs up to the fixture, is the hard one - there the neutral is spliced at the fixture and never reaches the switch at all.

    Watch forAssuming a white conductor is a neutral. In a switch loop the white is often re-purposed as a live and should be re-identified with tape - untaped, it is a trap for the next person.

  2. Decide how to solve a missing neutral

    Three honest answers. Run a new cable to the box, which is the proper fix and costs whatever access costs. Use a switch designed to work without a neutral, accepting its limits. Or put the intelligence in the bulb instead, with a battery wall remote on the plate for people to press.

  3. Check box fill and depth

    A smart switch has a body behind the plate where a plain toggle has almost nothing. Boxes are rated for a specific internal volume, and conductors, clamps, devices and grounds all count toward it.

  4. Handle three-way and multi-way locations

    Where two or three switches control one light, the traveller conductors between them do not carry a simple on/off signal. Systems solve this either with a matching companion switch wired into the second location, or with a wireless satellite that talks to the main device by radio.

  5. Dimming - where most of the disappointment lives

    Dimming a modern LED is not the simple resistive job dimming an incandescent was. Every dimmer has a minimum load it must see, and a single low-wattage LED often falls under it. Dimmers also come in leading-edge and trailing-edge types, and the wrong pairing with a given driver produces buzz, flicker, a dead band at the bottom of the range, or a lamp that will not strike at all.

  6. Fit, commission and label

    The device goes in, line and load are confirmed with a tester rather than by colour, and the switch is joined to the network and named. Dimmers need their trim set by hand so the bottom of the range is usable.

When smart switch installation is the wrong call

When saying yes is the wrong move:
  • There is no neutral and no reasonable route to run one. Put the intelligence in the bulb and stick a battery wall remote over the existing plate. Cheaper, reversible, and the household still has something to press.
  • The fixture is on a dimmer you actually like. Replacing a well-behaved dimmer with a smart one you then have to trim, test for flicker and re-lamp around is a lot of effort to gain an app.
  • The switch controls a receptacle, a motor or a fan. General-purpose smart switches are rated for lighting loads. Fans and motors need a device made for them.
  • The wiring in the box is aluminium, cloth-covered or knob-and-tube. The smart switch is not the project. Get the wiring assessed on its own merits first - that is an electrical question, not a smart home one.
  • You only want a timer. Ordinary programmable switches do schedules with no network, no app and no account. If nothing else needs to talk to it, that is the simpler answer.

  • For the three-way locations, are you fitting a wired companion or a wireless satellite? They behave differently and cost differently, and mixing a smart switch with a surviving conventional three-way is a classic source of intermittent faults.

A conventional switch just interrupts the live conductor going to the light and needs no power itself. A smart switch is a small always-on computer with a radio, and it needs a continuous trickle of power even when the light is off. The neutral is the return path that makes that possible. Where only the live and the switched conductor reach the box, there is no return path, and most smart switches cannot be fitted there without new cable.
Sometimes. There are switches designed for it, and they work by passing a very small current through the connected fixture to keep themselves alive. With larger loads that is invisible; with a single low-wattage LED it can make the lamp glow faintly, flicker or click, which is why makers of these switches often supply a bypass component to fit at the fixture. The alternatives are running a neutral properly, or putting the smart part in the bulb.
You cannot replace one of the two switches and leave the other alone - the pair are wired to each other through traveller conductors, and a conventional switch at the far end strands the smart one in whichever position it was left. The two working approaches are a matched companion switch wired into the second location, or a wireless satellite that sits there and talks to the main device by radio.
Almost always a mismatch between the dimmer and the lamp driver rather than a fault in either. Dimmers are built for leading-edge or trailing-edge operation and LED drivers respond very differently to each. Below a dimmer's minimum load - which a single small LED lamp can fall under - behaviour becomes unpredictable regardless of type. Check the maker's compatibility list against your exact lamps, and set the trim above the point where the lamp misbehaves.
