    A compatibility badge can mean two very different things. At one end, full local control: the thermostat exposes its state and accepts commands directly, and keeps doing so if the internet drops. At the other, a cloud-to-cloud link that lets a voice assistant set a temperature and little else.

A smart plug or a couple of lights teaches you more, costs less, and fails harmlessly.
The heating will still work - every reputable smart thermostat falls back to operating as an ordinary programmable thermostat from the wall, and its stored schedule keeps running. What you lose is remote control, app scheduling, and any automation that depends on another cloud service. That is the honest reason the network question deserves settling before the purchase rather than after it.
