Start by deleting the federal credit from your math. Rewiring America confirms the 25C credit's deadline has passed; it applied to installs through December 31, 2025. If a 2026 quote shows a $2,000 federal credit as a line item, that is either an out-of-date template or a misleading sales tactic — either way, question everything else in the quote.

State and utility rebates are the live channel. They vary enormously by location and change during the year as program funds run out. The only reliable way to check is to go directly to your electric or gas utility's rebate page and your state energy office, rather than trusting a contractor's summary. Ask whether the rebate is instant at point of sale or a mail-in claim, and who files it.

On financing itself: water heater replacement is often unplanned, which makes people accept whatever payment plan is on the tablet. Contractor-arranged financing can be genuinely fine — 0% promotional plans exist — but it can also carry deferred interest that back-charges you from day one if you miss the payoff date. Read the term, the APR after promo, and the deferred-interest clause.

It is also worth naming the cheapest form of financing: replacing on your own schedule. A tank that fails at 13 years is predictable. Planning the replacement at year 11 or 12 lets you shop three bids instead of taking the one available truck on a Saturday.

Verify rebates at the source

Your utility's own website and your state energy office. Program funds get exhausted mid-year, so a rebate that existed in January may not exist in October.

Reject any 2026 quote citing the federal 25C credit

It expired for installs after December 31, 2025. A quote that still includes it is not reliable on the rest of its numbers either.

Read the deferred interest clause

"No interest if paid in full by" is not the same as 0% APR. If you miss the date, interest can be charged retroactively on the whole original balance.

Compare financed total, not the monthly payment

Contractors quote monthly because it makes a $3,900 install feel like $89. Multiply it out and add fees before comparing bids.

Replace before failure if you can

Emergency replacement removes your negotiating power entirely. If your tank is past 10 years, start getting bids now rather than during a flood.
