  1. Confirm the circuit before confirming the unit

    An electric storage water heater needs its own dedicated circuit with a breaker and conductors matched to that specific unit's rating. The circuit that fed the old heater is a starting point, not a guarantee — a higher-wattage replacement, or an original installation that was marginal, both change the answer. The manufacturer's data plate is the authority, and a licensed electrician reads it.

    Watch for: The old breaker being reused because the new unit "looks the same". Element wattage varies between models that share a tank size, and an undersized circuit shows up as nuisance tripping months later rather than as an obvious fault on day one.

  2. Check the panel has room and capacity

    Space for a double-pole breaker is one question; whether the service has capacity for the load is another. Older panels, and homes that have added an EV charger, a range or air conditioning since the panel was installed, are where this becomes a real conversation rather than a formality.

    Watch for: A panel that is already full and being solved with a tandem breaker or a double-tapped lug. That is not a fix, it is a deferral, and an inspector may well fail it.

  3. Size for recovery, not just for gallons

    This is where electric genuinely differs from gas. Resistance elements reheat a tank more slowly than a gas burner does, so an electric tank of the same nominal size gives you a lower first hour rating. Households that shower back-to-back often need a physically larger electric tank than the gas one they are replacing to get the same experience.

    Watch for: A like-for-like gallon swap from gas to electric. It is the single most common reason people conclude their new electric heater is "weaker" — it is not faulty, it was sized on the wrong number.

  4. Set, connect and wire

    The tank is set on a level base with a pan where required, water lines connected with dielectric protection where dissimilar metals meet, and the circuit landed at the unit's junction box with a means of disconnect. The temperature and pressure relief valve gets a full-size discharge line terminating where code permits.

    Watch for: Power connected before the tank is completely full. Energising a dry or partially filled electric heater burns the elements out almost immediately, and it is a genuinely common and entirely avoidable mistake.

  5. Fill, purge, energise and set both thermostats

    The tank is filled with air purged from the lines at an open hot tap, then the breaker goes on. Most residential electric tanks have two elements with separate thermostats that alternate rather than run together. Both need setting; only one being adjusted is a frequent cause of inconsistent temperature.

    Watch for: Only the accessible upper thermostat being set. The lower one lives behind its own panel and is easy to skip, and the mismatch produces exactly the vague "sometimes it is fine" complaint that is hard to diagnose later.

The practical fix is to size on first hour rating rather than gallons — households that draw heavily in a short window often need a physically larger electric tank than the gas one they replaced.
On a two-element electric tank, that is the classic signature of one failed element — usually the lower one, which does most of the sustained heating. The remaining element keeps the top of the tank warm, so you get some hot water that runs out quickly and then goes tepid. Elements and thermostats are inexpensive parts. Get it tested before anybody sells you a new tank.

Compared with gas, usually yes in markets where gas is inexpensive, because resistance heating converts electricity to heat at a fixed one-to-one basis with no efficiency gain to be had.
