Venting, combustion air and draft decide whether a gas install is safe - not the badge on the tank. What a competent installer checks, and what to do when the flue no longer works.
What is gas water heater installation?
A gas water heater burns fuel inside your home, so the install is really two jobs: connecting the appliance, and proving that its exhaust reliably leaves the building. That second job is the one that matters. The vent type - atmospheric, power vent, or direct vent - is decided by where the unit sits and what draft is available, not by preference, and a replacement often cannot reuse the old flue even when the new unit looks identical. Combustion air, draft and carbon monoxide are the reason this is licensed, permitted, inspected work.
Signs you need gas water heater installation
- Soot, scorching or rust streaks around the draft hood at the top of the tank
- A burner flame that is yellow and lazy rather than crisp and blue
- A pilot or burner that keeps going out, or a unit that lights and then shuts down again
- Condensation, staining or crumbling mortar visible where the flue enters the chimney
- A furnace was recently replaced with a high-efficiency unit, leaving the water heater alone on a chimney sized for both
- The heater has been closed into a smaller space by a remodel - a new closet door, a finished basement wall, weatherstripping added everywhere

How gas water heater installation actually works
Start at the exhaust, not the appliance
A competent installer looks at where the products of combustion are meant to go before deciding what unit can be installed. That means inspecting the existing flue or chimney for size, condition, slope and blockage, and establishing whether anything else vents into it. The answer determines the unit type, so it comes first.

Check whether the chimney has been orphaned
This catches a lot of people. When a furnace is upgraded to a high-efficiency model, it stops venting into the shared masonry chimney and vents out the side wall instead. The water heater is then alone on a flue that was sized for two appliances. Too much cross-section for too little exhaust means the flue runs cold, draft becomes unreliable, and moisture condenses inside the chimney and attacks it.

Confirm there is enough combustion air
An atmospheric unit needs air from the room to burn, and it needs the room to be able to replace that air. Choose the venting strategy the space actually supports

Direct vent draws combustion air from outside and exhausts outside through a sealed assembly, which is what makes it viable in tight or confined spaces.

Gas supply, sediment trap and shut-off

Set the unit, connect water and fit the relief discharge

Where the unit is in a garage, elevation and impact-protection rules may apply locally.

Fire it and prove the draft

On an atmospheric unit this is commonly checked at the draft hood shortly after ignition, and ideally with the house in its worst case: exhaust fans and dryer running, doors closed.

The permit gets closed by an inspector who looks at the vent, the gas work and the relief discharge. Before the installer leaves, you should know where the gas shut-off is, what the burner should look like, and that working carbon monoxide alarms are in place.

When gas water heater installation is the wrong call
When saying yes is the wrong move:
- There is no practical vent path and the space is confined. An interior closet with no exterior wall and no usable flue is where gas stops being the cheap option. Once you are pricing a new vent run through finished space, an electric or heat pump unit is often both cheaper and simpler.
- Your chimney was orphaned by a furnace upgrade and you are not willing to reline it. Running a lone water heater on an oversized, cold, deteriorating flue is not a corner worth cutting. If the liner is not in budget, change vent strategy or change fuel - do not proceed as though the flue is fine.
- You are in a region where the heater must live inside conditioned, sealed space. Tight, well-sealed homes fight atmospheric combustion. Direct vent solves it, but if that is not workable in your layout, a fuel that does not need air is the more honest answer.
- Gas costs more than electricity where you live, and the unit runs constantly. Fuel prices are regional and they move. Check your own utility rates rather than assuming gas is always the cheaper fuel to run - in some markets it no longer is.
- The old unit failed because of a venting or backdraft problem nobody has diagnosed. Fitting an identical new heater to the same broken flue reproduces the fault with a new warranty on it. Fix the cause first.
- You cannot get a licensed gas fitter and are tempted to do it yourself. This is the one on this list with a body count. Combustion appliances are not a DIY category, regardless of how straightforward the plumbing looks.

What to check when hiring for gas water heater installation
- Has anything else stopped venting into this chimney recently? The orphaned-flue problem is invisible unless someone asks. A furnace upgrade a few years ago can be the reason this install needs a liner.
- Will you test the draft with the house closed up and the exhaust fans running? That is the condition under which backdrafting actually occurs. A test on a house with the doors open proves nothing you need to know.
- Where does this unit get its combustion air, and is that supply adequate? The answer should be specific - a stated opening, a louvred door, or an outside intake - not "the room".
- Is the vent being reused or replaced, and why? Reuse is sometimes correct and sometimes lazy. Making the installer justify it is how you find out which one you are getting.
- How will you leak-test the gas connections? You want a named method applied to every joint that was disturbed, not a general reassurance.
- Are you licensed for gas work in this jurisdiction, and who is pulling the permit? Gas fitting licensing is separate from plumbing in many places. Confirm the person doing the gas work is the person allowed to.
- Do I have working carbon monoxide alarms in the right places? The cheapest item connected to this entire job, and the one that matters most if anything else on this list was done badly.
