Everything else can usually wait for a normal appointment. Gas. If you smell gas, leave the house and call from outside. Do not attempt to diagnose it. Published safety guidance is to turn the gas off, and that natural gas should only be turned back on by a professional. This is the one category where cost should not enter your thinking at all.
Water. An active leak from a washer, dishwasher or refrigerator line is urgent because of what it does to floors and subfloors, not because of the appliance. Shut the supply valve, then call. A refrigerator leak repair itself is $60–$250 and a dishwasher leak $50–$300 — small numbers next to water damage.
Electrical and burning smells. Unplug the appliance if you can do it safely and stop using it. Don't run a machine that smells like burning to see if it does it again.
A dead refrigerator is the borderline case. It's a food-loss problem rather than a safety one, and emergency refrigerator labor at $110–$300 per hour is roughly double the normal $100–$250. Moving perishables to a cooler or a neighbor's fridge and booking a normal appointment is often the cheaper decision.
A noisy dryer, a dishwasher that won't drain, an oven that won't hold temperature — none of these are emergencies. Paying emergency rates for them is the most common way people overspend in this category.
